Unread post by MUTT_KAHUNA ED » December 25th, 2008, 2:41 pm

During the annual Reno air races (The worlds fastest motorsport) My buddy and I took a flight on the B-17 Liberty Belle..it was fantastic!...If anyone has a chance to ride on one of the few remaining flyable B-17's...DO IT!..there's talk that the TSA is trying to either severely restrict or ground completely flights of this type..so NOW IS THE TIME!..here's a few short video clips of my flight..1st: take off,my seat was across from port side waist gunner....2nd: climb out.....3rd:view out of the radio operators hatch/port looking towards the tail (really windy!) 4th: the pilots.....5th; me seated at the bombardiers seat, notice the norden bombsight as I plan a bomb run on a ritzy section of my city!...enjoy!

great stuff, thanks for sharing- I was amazed at how small they are inside and to think they were unpressurized and flew at high {freezing} altitudes for their 8 -10 hour missions. Took some courage to fly in them. over 35% loss rates in combat. One of my uncles was a B-17 aircraft commander at age 18 in europe! Today he could even get inside one.
There are only 12 or so restored and flying today.
You were lucky to get a ride in one.

The Yankee Air Museum in Willow Run Mi offers rides in a B17 and a B25.
The museum is a really cool place to visit.
The museum was once housed in the orginal hanger that Ford Motor Co built during WW2 when they were building B24's.
In 2004 the hanger caught fire. They were able to get the B17, B25 and C47 out of the hanger in time.
If your ever in the Detroit area and have some free time I highly suggest checking it out.
