Need Help with M4 mount on 151A2

Unread post by 11B2P » September 3rd, 2017, 4:11 pm

I recently purchased a 1970 A2. Last couple of months have been spent correcting sins of the previous owner maintenance wise. There is no rust and does not appear to have been cut. I have an M4 mount ready to install. Searching the forums, this seems like a simple task. I cannot find any evidence of the predrilled holes or dimples, nor the reinforcements underneath. From underneath, above the muffler, between the frame rails is a flat plate maybe 1/8" thick. It sits between the frame rails, by about 3/16" and follows the expanding width of the "X" and is welded near both ends to rods that run between the rails and the rods are welded to the rails. Thus is sits slightly below the floor, by the diameter of the rods. Going by pictures and the manual, I drilled pilot holes where I thought the front of the mount should go. One pilot hole is just to the inside of the right frame rail and the second hit the left rail. Seems I need to go slightly farther forward. Any thoughts or suggestions? This will be for a live fire 30 cal full auto, so I want to get it right!!
Thanks

Hello; If you give me a couple of days, as I do have the MWO for installing the M4 mount, have to dig it out of storage, and busy labor day with a show. The MWO shows the measurements from the top side as to where to drill the holes and shows where to measure from. Your e mail would work the best for me to get the copies to you. Larry

Thanks to Larry for sending me the MWO measurements. Told me that I was within fractions of the correct placement. There are no reinforcing tabs as described, only the large keystone shaped plate that is sitting between the rails that I described in my original post. Has anyone ever seen a plate like this? What are the odds that somethings are not as they were when it left the factory in 1970??? Plan now is to mount as near to the correct location as possible using the plate as reinforcement. Unless anyone else has a suggestion.

Is this a Ford A2? With the rare front fender setup? If so I certainly would NOT be punching holes in it for a mount you are going to HATE the very first time you jump in the drivers seat and smack your elbow on that pedestal! Do you realize the 1970 Ford A2 was kind of a rarity among 151's?

It's an AMG, not a Ford. So nothing rare. No doubt, there will be some cussing and bruising caused by the pedestal. Fortunately, I live in a free state and the mount is for a full auto 1919 and I am sure the fun will out weigh the pain! The 1919 currently moves around on an M-274 Mule, so the MUTT is quite the upgrade. I'm definitely too old and hopefully too wise to hump it more than a few feet! In my mind though, I'm only a winning lottery ticket away from an M60!

Gothca, BUT, AMG did not make M-151's before late 1972 so it cannot be a 70 if it is a AMG. And thank God there are still free states!!!

Rick. Thanks for the info. Now I don't know what I have. Data plate says delivery 6/70 and manufacturer AM GENERAL. Title says same year and manufacturer. Plate looks old, but I realize that things happen in 50 years. Any other clues I should look for?

Does it have an emissions canister and emissions gas tank? If yes then probably 74 or later no canister then late 72-73. Floor drains on Ford model were scupper drains in floor and AMG's had drains in the side panel hear front of floor pan. Ford body tag is on cowl right above the valve cover and AMG body tag is on the transmission tunnel about where you right ankle would be when driving, it will be behind the lines that are there. Either of these tags could be missing, especially if the data plate has been replaced as it appears to have been. If you can post pictures or email some to me I can give you a better idea of what you have.

So, when I put my pedestal in I'll just keep quiet about it.
