Markings for MERDC Camo
After one year my project finally comes to an end. I did the MERDC Camo this week and will will now put on the unit markings etc.
So what was the most common on markings when it comes to "check batteries daily" and "do not overill" etc?
Is there something like a good data base for period pictures of the 80s?

Re: Markings for MERDC Camo
I absolutely LOVE the pics of these vehicles in actual use. Dog-eared, worn, nothing matches. Makes me feel so good about mine.

Re: Markings for MERDC Camo
Nice Pictures!
But no hood markings with "US Army" and serial Number?
Also no check Batt etc. ?
What I have found so far everything was possible.

Re: Markings for MERDC Camo
I think that was Ken's point when he said "among other things" in his post about that one with the reversed star.
The camo vehicles did not have visible markings other than subdued markings on the bumper. The serial number was under the hood and/or on the dashboard. I don't remember but I am pretty sure the gas warning was also in black subdued print. There was no star on the camo vehicles. Nor was there one on the later green A2's, they were also subdued. I think there is a manual in our manual section that covers paint and lettering.
From the manual.
All white vehicle markings must be removed from
the vehicle. This includes the stars, unit identification,
instruction signs, and administrative markings. When
the vehicle is pattern painted only the following markings
are applied.
(
1
)
Unit identification
. Type and location
remain the same. Color is changed to lusterless
camouflage black.
(
2
)
National symbol (star)
. All stars will be
removed and replaced by a 3-inch black lusterless star
front and rear. Placement should be centered on
vehicle, on line with unit ID markings. On the rear of
wheeled vehicles, star may be placed on tailgate.
(
3
)
Agency and registration number
. Both
US Army and registration number will be removed from
vehicle exterior. Registration number may be placed on
a data plate or other suitable interior location.
(
4
)
Safety and instructional markings
.
Markings such as tire pressure and fuel type and fill level
may be retained in lusterless black letters no larger than
1-inch. Markings directly related to troop safety, such as
wrecker boom capacity and danger zones, must be
evaluated by safety personnel.
3-6.

Re: Markings for MERDC Camo
On-to-Berlin,
Rick has given you the correct details.
I'd like to add.....
1. The mutt in the top picture (being tied down) doesn't appear to have a battery-box cover fitted, and as it is a Military Police vehicle, you would assume that they would know it should be there.)
2. The warning..."Check Batteries Daily" is a local SOP, it is not officially prescribed in the instructions.
3. In the second picture, the warning "Do Not Overfill" is missing. It should be there.

Re: Markings for MERDC Camo
Thank you for the official description.
Ken, I have looked at several original pictures of what I have found so far and markings seem to have a lot of variations.
Hood numbers for examples. Most Mutts in Camo do not seem to have hood numbers. If the have then its only the number but no "US Army". Only one picture from the early 1980s seem to have an A1 in MERDC with "US Army" and hood number.
So I think everything is pretty much possible.
I think I will make a mix and and do not mark the Mutt too much.

the key to all this is... "What era do you want the vehicle to represent?" and "Which geographical zone do you want your vehicle to be destined for?" and finally, "What Branch of Service? - Army? USMC? USAF? US Navy?"
When you have decided those questions....let me know and I'll explain the official regulations.

Re: Markings for MERDC Camo
Ken,
I am aiming late 70s/early 80s US Army here in Germany. No specific unit. The A2 was set up as a radio truck judging from all the holes on the rear fenders. So the typical Reforger look.
