I got my exhaust gasket kit from here. They're in Germany and I'm in UK. Appreciate you're in Australia ...

Comparable or cheaper than if I get stuff from the US, once shipping and taxes are taken into account. Plus they deliver within 2-4 days in Europe, which suits me here in the UK! These guys in the Netherlands are a bit cheaper on some items, but don't have the same range. http://www.truckpartstrading.nl/2011/we ... m151-parts

There also seem to be a lot of MUTT parts available in Italy now, but not had call to use them yet.

Removed manifolds etc and replaced all gaskets , started it up and the exhaust leak was worse than before. removed everything again and found the exhaust gasket had moved out of place half an inch on reassembly. Glued the gasket in place with gasket goo and bound it with string until dried and reassembled again. success ! It purrs like a kitten. Those flat gaskets on a round manifold are bloody awkward to keep in place, there must be a trick to it. Now for the tranny, who has a fully reconditioned one and will ship to L.A. Col

I have reconditioned one that I did and put in mine and I don't want to do another! They are a tight SOB to work on! Getting the gear clusters out of the case you only have a few thousandths to play with to squeeze them out and to do it right they have to go in and out several times during the setup phase unless you are extremely lucky and the end plays are all perfect on the first shot. That is not likely. I lost a lot of skin on that job.

Glad to here that the exhaust is finally quiet.

dandeejet in Texas is selling full reco for $695 . any knowledge of their workmanship or reputation. Big risk when guarantees are no use outside the US. Is that a fair price ? Col

The price is fair for a fully rebuilt transmission. I can't say anything about the workmanship. I have heard the name but nothing about them good or bad.

The problem with govt. rebuilds is the same old story, lowest bidder. It is all contract work when it comes to stuff as late as the M151. It used to be that stuff was all done in house back in the 50's and prior but then the politicians got involved and it is all farmed out to subcontractors. Lowest bid wins the contract and to get the lowest bid you have to cut corners somewhere. Every government rebuild engine I have torn down has had issues. One M151 engine and several larger diesel engines. Most of it was just plain shoddy workmanship.
I am not saying to not buy a govt. rebuild, it will work and probably work just fine but don't pay a lot of money for it just because it say Govt. rebuild on it. Dandeejet apparently does these transmissions more as a hobby than to make money at it. I would talk to him and ask a few questions.

I believe Xlofyer got his rebuild trans from them and as yet has had no issues that I know of. He's a lurker so you might want to send him a PM.

Too be honest, it is pretty hard to screw up a M-151 transmission rebuild. You are basically just replacing old parts with new parts. The trick is setting the end play in the gear stacks and even if you get it off by a bit you will not really notice it unless it is really off. The main issues are in the details like the thrust washer that always leaks and has to be sealed even though it is not stated in the manual. Cleanliness when doing the job. If you can do these things then you can do the job yourself.

government rebuild: I can only second what Rick says. I had a government rebuild engine. After about 1.000 miles, one of the freeze plugs had a pinhole. When I subsequently replaced all freeze plugs, there was a lot of rust and dirt behind them. So they rebuild the engine, bored out the cylinders, documented it with a dyno run but did not do the most basic work cleaning the block.

The problem with rebuilding a transmission is that getting all the parts needing replacement is in most case very expensive. And some parts are hard to get. I rebuild the transfer which was quite straightforward and rewarded me with a much less noisy transmission.

Saturn Surplus had every single part you could need to rebuild that transmissions right down to the individual gears and his prices were fantastic. Unfortunately he sold out his entire inventory to Army Jeep parts who is now just sitting on most of it waiting for it to become very hard to find and then releasing it at outrageous prices. What stuff he does sell he quadrupled the prices on.

Thank you all for your advice. It seems a nos from Red River is the way to go , a couple of hundred dollars extra and peace of mind sounds good. I'm wondering if in US talk does that mean transfer box as well . I have no idea what to expect. your advice please.
