1961 M151 restoration

Unread post by matt506 » November 23rd, 2017, 12:28 am

Hopefully in a few years and a couple dozen posts I can sit here and see a real nice M151 without taking a second mortgage on the house. Here is what came with it and what it really is. It is from Springfield MO and has some history with the Shriner Circus or Temple. The data plate and title both list it as a M151A1 made by Ford, serial number 2L0406 delivered 9-66 with a EPA tag on the engine stating 1973. The truth through research so far is that the MUTT was made in 61 or up to June of 62( the reflectors have 61 on them and it only has one dash vent. The casting on the motor is 26-1-71. Thinking that the body was made by Kaiser as there is no budd tag. The total cost was $700 delivered within 35 miles of my house. Please enjoy and all suggestions and info welcomed. I'm guessing Ford versus Kaiser just because of the bottom shovel handle rail. Have you checked under the front grill on top of the frame rails for a serial number tag yet?

No tags at all not even holes for a riveted on tag. No foil ones no spot welded budd tag either. Must have been a CIA black ops jeep as there is no ID numbers or tags on here except the A1 dash tag ehich was added and is wrong.

It is not uncommon for those tags, especially the foil ones to be knocked off by sanding or pressure washing. The Budd tag would leave some little holes from the welds so if nothing there then it was probably a foil tag and it was knocked off, nothing as devious as you mentioned. The data plate thing is quite common in the never ending search for a title. Just like the later engine, that was quite common even in service to change out the powerpack on a normal basis. Unless you are lucky enough to be able to gently sand down to the original numbers on the hood it is unlikely you will ever know the real true age of the vehicle.

Actually the first thing I did was to sand the hood the first day I got it. Also a no go as it was completely stripped at one time and bonded to death with about 7 layers of paint. What would a early one like this have for a registration?

Like Jurassic Park, these always start with oohs and ahhhs...and end with a lot of running and screaming.

But seriously, congratulations. Enjoy your MUTT!

Cheers,
TJ

So did you get anything useful from Guru? I'm just guessing a 2C #### or 2D #### hood number and data plate but that's just a guess on my part based on early year.

Well nothing on numbers or definant dates as i have no numbered plates and any marking have been sanded off years ago. So my next thing is I ordered a completel new m151 data plate. So now what number would fit for a January 61 to june 62 m151?
