what if?
I'm reading through several threads, old and new, about transmissions that have sat with water in them. Xloflyr gave me his old transmission which has, by all appearances, become a boat anchor, owing to water inside the case.
What if the transmission were to be de-rusted while still assembled, using electrolysis, or simply filled with red vinegar? I know it might be hard on the softer metals but we're still talking about a transmission rebuild here, anyway.
Cheers,
TJ

Re: what if?
There was a thread where someone did just that. Has pictures, etc. If I remember correctly they had it back in and working after dumping and soaking over and over for awhile. Was good enough to get it going. Don't remember how long it lasted or if it's still going. Tried searching but can't seem to find it now. Maybe someone else remembers or it was on the 503. I guess I would just be worried about it locking up at speed.

It was one of the East Winds guys. They put some type of acid in it.

Re: what if?
Well, I'm concerned about what an electrolytic bath would do to the the softer metals. Maybe I'll just take it apart and give it a detailed cleaning by hand and see how it goes. It's not that I need to save it but I hate to toss it.

A true pack rat. I got rid of something one time, needed it a month later.m3a1 wrote:Well, I'm concerned about what an electrolytic bath would do to the the softer metals. Re: what if?
With the number of used transmissions out there and the wirk required to get it freed up for rebuild.
A good used one would make more sense.
Just a thought.

Think about it, remember when there were so many engines that NOS engines were under a thousand bucks. Well under in a lot of cases. T/O engines were 150.00. Those days are gone and engines are getting a bit scarce and decent ones are also getting expensive. If the gears are not rusted too badly then it is always worth keeping around to rebuild since they have not made those transmissions in a long time and people are going to start to hoard them just like engines eventually.

Re: what if?
Rick, we don't hoard........we just put away for the future.
We may just need that part ......someday.
Some years ago I had about 6 NOS in box differentials. Since I just KNEW I could never afford a M151, I sold them all.
Now I own a M151, and really regret selling them.
Packrats forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: what if?
It's my transmission that got the acid treatment. Swayze used some sort of phosphoric acid. I will check with him to see exactly what he used. It seemed to clean it up as far as a visual inspection goes. It will be a while before the Mutt is ready to have the power pack installed. I will let everyone know how it acts once I have driven it.
Re: what if?
If it was Phosphoric acid and knowing Swayze was, Lets say, Frugal, I would guess he filled it with Coca-Cola. Don't laugh, it is a good rust remover. Makes you wonder what you are drinking huh?

Re: what if?
Well, this transmission really only represents an opportunity for me to play with it and experiment a little with no risk to my pocketbook since it was a freebee. So it's the process that chiefly interests me.
I've never actually gotten into one of these transmissions but they seem very straightforward.

Re: what if?
The beauty of it is, there are no time constraints, there is no vehicle waiting on this transmission and there is no penalty for total failure. Ya gotta love it!
