Wheel Spindle Woes

Unread post by m75 » February 8th, 2018, 8:26 pm

OK, of course it's the last wheel spindle/brake on the truck to be removed for overhaul...

I have the right-rear spindle, suspension support and brake backing plate still together as a unit, but off the truck. The splined portion of the U-joint yoke seems to be frozen in the splines of the spindle. I have soaked in penetrating oil for two nights, and have attempted to use a three-jaw puller with no luck. Next was using a three pound mallet and a deep socket around the yoke threaded shaft, trying to drive the yoke back out of the support. Again, no luck.

I'll purchase replacements if no other option works, but I'd like to get these items apart for a deep clean, renovation and rebuild. Any reasonable ideas accepted gladly!

Moderate heat? I had one that I pulled the breather on and used the 20T press to get it to separate. That was after trying the soak it method, in diesel for over a week. Problem was too much grease and it had coagulated into near roofing tar like substance. Patience grasshopper.

Remove the housing from the control arm(6 bolts) and as Ferg said, press it out.

Copied. Ferg, I removed the assembly from the suspension arm prior to discovering the unwillingness of the parts to release from each other. The other three wheels presented no similar challenge. All four of the half-shafts have congealed grease packed inside, but I have been able to break them all apart, clean and re-finish them without the same hassles as this one spindle.

I'll take it to a local machine shop and seek their assistance for the shop press. This is wayyyy to much for the simple HF three-jaw puller to handle.

Where is it seized? Does it turn or is this a result of a bearing gone bad and now everything has welded itself together in there?

I don't understand what you have written because you are talking about removing the yoke from the splined shaft (of which it is an integral part).

Referring you to page six of my Alley Cat thread (link below) for some visuals hoping it will help get us all on the same page.

From the -20P (1978, off the G8383 site), diagram figure 63. the splines of the yoke (#12) appear to be seized within the matching splines of the spindle (#19). As such, the brake backing plate and support (#16) are trapped between the two.

I have dropped the assembly off at the machine shop and will retrieve it next week, hopefully in a shape that allows re-use of the frozen parts.

Picked it up Monday, after the assembly went for a ride in a 20 ton press at the shop. Enough pressure and a hammer tap and it broke loose, no heat other than the friction caused by the press. The splined portion of the yoke shaft are pretty messed up now, although the shop will try to repair the threads once I clean up the parts.

For the price of all of that it might have been cheaper to have gotten a NOS replacement!

Not this time RIck, $20.00. The same shop is pressing in the rear A-arm bushings for gratis, after explaining what the parts fit on.
