Data Plate Help

Unread post by Redlight » February 11th, 2018, 5:02 pm

I recently purchased a M416 From GSA. The form 97 lists model as M416F wuih unknown year and Vin Number.
The Trailer has two identifiers on it.

I have a new blank Date plate that I can stamp.
Any Idea on Year of Manufacture?
Can I use 5395 as the Vin Number?
Was there a Model M413F?
Thanks

That is up to the local motor vehicle dept but I hope you have that paperwork that is referenced on the tag. If not and you try to use the original serial number then you could be in a world of hurt because at that point it is a stolen vehicle. The reason that tag is there is because those trailers, and vehicles, were given to the municipalities and state services by the government. The rules are that when they are done with them they are to be returned or sold according to the rules laid out by the government. This is usually not done and they are just sold at a municipal auction and that is it. The government is not likely to come looking for it but trying to register it under the original numbers could get complicated. Check into it further before actually moving on it.

Your trailer looks like the one I got. Mine was that same faded red color. It has the original data plate on it where some gorilla stamped a new number on it.

I was able to sand down the paint on the back of the trailer and find the original numbers. All I had was a bill of sale from the previous owner. He did not keep the paper work from the Fire Dept. I am lucky that in my State you are not required to have a tag on your trailer if it is under a certain size.

To be clear. I purchased this trailer from the US Government through GSA. The Form 97 is made out to me. it lists the manufacturer as Stevens with no VIN.
In my research, I can find no reference to a M416F. I see M416B1 as the only variant. I am aware of three manufacturers, Stevens, Johnson, and Cemsco.
I have not found anywhere that lists the differences between the manufacturers. My limited review of Stevens Vin versus dates of manufacture shows the following.
Serial number Date
1498 08-66
227 12-65
13337 08-67
7911 02-67
6-7385 01-66
7106 01-67
13803 1967
9140 03-67
2257 09-66
Based upon a limited data set, I would think my trailer was manufactured late 1966 most likely in November 1966.
Please feel free to comment.
Thanks

The trailer would have started life as a standard 416 in the military and then been transferred to the fire service. At that time they would have taken the original data plates off and put on the one you see there. Why? I don't know, probably just to cover their behinds if it ever walked away.

Stevens Manufacturing had several contracts for M416 trailers. Every time a new contract commenced, Stevens started a new numbering system which does not appear to take into account their previous numbers. So there could be more than one Stevens trailer with the same "5395" number but with a different contract number.
From my research, I haven't found any reference to an M416 "F" model.

Somewhere in my records I have details of a Stevens M416 numbered 5442 which was delivered Dec 1966, built under Contract DA20-113-AMC-07506-(T).

As your trailer is a slightly earlier number, I think you should use that contract reference but with a date-of-delivery probably Nov-66 ........I doubt if anyone will be in a position to argue with you.
