tranny

Unread post by incoming » April 3rd, 2018, 8:50 pm

Seems like the only time I post is when I have trouble. But the advice is always appreciated. I was idling in a driveway with the clutch pushed in and gearshift in first. Suddenly it felt like something hit me from behind. The MUTT lurched forward but did not move from its position. Weird. I looked around to see what might have happened and saw nothing. Had to get home and the MUTT made it, but noticed shifting was irregular and not smooth. Got home and got the MUTT into the shop. Tried to back up and only got grinding. Tried first gear, same thing. Will not go into gear while running. Have not tried to force it into gear. Shut her down and did a visual but cannot see anything amiss. I'm not a mechanic, but obviously the clutch, throw out bearing and/or linkage must be the issue. Any ideas gentlemen? As usual, I appreciate any information.

Throw out bearing or pressure plate? not likely the clutch fork broke, sounds like the engine is coming out, you need to fix that transfer linkage anyway. :D

Sounds like clutch disc or pressure plate issues. I had the same type of thing happen to my Jeep Comanche pickup. One of the springs in the clutch disc came out and jammed things up in the pressure plate. I had a good clutch pedal, but it wouldn't disengage. Had to drive it 200 miles home that way.

Before you go too far look closely at the arms on the Z-bar where the rod from the clutch pedal attaches and that in turn attaches to the rod going to the transmission. It is attached to the side of the engine below the exhaust. Goes between the engine and a bracket on the frame. I have seen several of those Z-bars have the ears where the rods attach crack and bend on them.

After you inspect as Rick said pull the bell housing cover of and look around.
As was said earlier had a clutch disk spring shatter and stick between the disk and flywheel.
Fortunately it was only around the corner from my house. I was able to limp home
Was leaving on a 150 mile trip!

Thanks guys. Actually the first thing I did was check the Z bar and my pedal is still good. Detached the return spring from the block and adjusted the clutch rod which gave me a soft pedal, so I adjusted it back to the original setting of about an inch an a half travel at the top. I think that Hambone may be right. "That engine's gonna have to come out anyway". Got to fix the the plunger rod for the four wheel drive. My daughter said that it was really a bummer to have the MUTT broke down. I told her that's part of the hobby that is just as important (and fun....sometimes) as driving them! I can't thank you guys enough for the super quick responses and great information. My sincerest appreciation to you all. BUT.....tune in later for more questions when I find precious time to jerk the power pack!
Warm regards,

You can take the cover off of the bottom of the bell housing and get a real good look at all of the stuff up in there. Watch for any bits that may be laying in the bottom of the cover as you take it off, they may give a clue as to what broke.

I really hope that you have not been filling up the transmission-transfer with oil. If you have recently done this....let us know.... (ref: reverse idler arm).

I doubt if that is it Ken, He tried reverse and got grinding which means the reverse idler is still there.

Hi Rick.... yes, I know it's unlikely, but it is possible. And if he has fiddled with the wrong "fill" plug... he may not need to pull the whole power-pack to fix the problem :D

Alright guys, what gives? Oil in the transmission-transfer case......reverse idler? Way over my head. I think that I added gear oil to the tranny to top it off after I first got the MUTT two years ago. But not since then. Don't remember what I used but it was whatever the manual says to use. 80 weight gear oil? Not sure. Was wondering what the best manual to buy would be that shows tranny and other major component breakdowns. Any info appreciated. M151 A2. Not sure what year. Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm an enthusiast, not a mechanic, but I ain't afraid to learn. Thanks again gentlemen. Incoming

Here are all the manuals for free download.

http://www.g838.org/public_html/added_p ... nuals.html

You want the -20 manuals to tell you how to take the transmission out and the -34 manual to tell you how to overhaul the transmission. The -20P and -34P manuals are parts manuals and are great for blow ups diagrams to show where everything goes. The dates of the manuals do not really matter in this case since all of the transmissions are the same, the later manuals may be easier to read since they are newer. They are military manuals and as such are set up to be followed in a very prescribed front to back manner so if you are skipping back and forth it can get confusing.

hi

i think it must be the clutch do as fill wrote before

the first an rear gear are not synchronized so if the clutch comes not complete free it grinds
you can try it out put the mutt at first gear hold the clutch down and start the engine
if the mutt will go driving the clutch come`s not free
for the transmission i have a made a paper with tools and tips give me your Email adres at a pm and i send it over to you
