manual engine turn over

Unread post by dr. trinkmann » May 22nd, 2018, 3:33 am

Hi everybody!

I want to setup the engine's valve play and so I'm wondering what's be best location/method to turn the engine over by hand?
Recently I always turned it over by pulling the fan blades, but I don't think that this is the best way to do so.
Normally (on other cars) the camshaft pulley is first choice to turn the engine over by hand,
but with this vehicle this method doesn't seem to work well since there isn't enough space to operate.
Any suggestions or advice for me?

Thanks a lot, have a nice day.

Take out the spark plugs first. Then you'll be able to turn the engine over with your little finger............

I always use the fan, Just put a little pressure on the fan belt with your other hand and the fan pulley will not slip. If you remove the plugs it is even easier. Just make sure the switch is off. It is very unlikely that the engine would fire at the speed you are turning it but it only takes a second to double check. When working on a car I just take the keys out. If the vehicle has a clutch fan then you need to put a socket on the crankshaft pulley. Trying to turn the engine with the camshaft is not a good idea since the cam is turning half the speed of the crank, turning on the can means you are trying to turn the crank double the speed of the cam and that is a lot of force on a normally small bolt.

The spec calls for adjustment to be Hot.
Have always done it on a running engine.

Vin Zike can tell you what happens when it was done cold.

The specification calls for the valves to be adjusted with the engine hot and running. I no longer do that because with the arthritis in my hands I just can't take the vibration. I get the engine hot and then shut it off and adjust the valves that way. I have never had a problem and when I have checked them running afterwards they were right on.

And that joke was aimed at M3a1 not you so no worries.
