Ok, here's some additional information on the caps on the NOS axle shaft U Joints.

The gap for the retaining clip is a very generous .075" width, whereas the clips I have measure only .063" so there is a little wriggle room there.

The distance from the top of the cap to the top of the retaining clip groove is .315".

The civilian "crossover" u joints for the axle shafts that have been mentioned thus far (such as the NAPA 445) are correct in their overall height and correct in their overall diameter but the caps have been wrong - more specifically, the placement of the retaining clip groove is wrong in that the distance from the top of the cap to the top of the retaining clip groove on those is far more than .315".

I haven't installed the NOS ones I just bought but I did check them against the old ones that I took out of my truck. They're a perfect match so, these measurements are correct. If you are considering something that isn't NOS, now you'll have the data to make an informed decision.

Cheers,
TJ

Ok? And this means what? Is this a comparison from NOS to civilian?

I edited my post, Rick, in order to make it more clear. Those measurements are what one might use to determine if their civvy u joint might be suitable for use in the MUTT as a crossover. I really don't want to make any additional reference to what is incorrect. I think we've seen about enough of that.

Here's photos of some NOS universal joints I managed to find for my axle shafts. Unfortunately, they weren't stored well so they're not very pretty but they'll be quite alright once they're mounted.

You know I JUST installed my new ones... like minutes ago. I'll measure the old ones when I get a few minutes.

I’m a bit confused. Are we saying that there are some off the shelf u joints that are actual replacements for the MUTT ones? That would be good - I spent quite some time looking for such a beast without success.

Soooooo, are we saying a person could get a NAPA 445 and change out the 2 caps with the originals and have a working replacement? :?
Still crazy after all these years.

No, the caps aren't interchangeable.

And yes, over time there has been some speculation that there exists a civvy crossover for our axle U joints. As yet, this is unproven.

This is only coming up because I was needing new axle shaft U joints (and suffering sticker shock  ) and so, I got into some old posts as well as our Wiki and found a lot of mysterious references that had me chasing my tail for quite a while. I know we all hate bad info so, I'm trying to be a good citizen here on the 838 and I thought I might put some of this bunk to rest because promoting bad information really isn't what we do here.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I just put up a chart with ALL of the measurements for all of the u-joints that are out there in civvy world. All someone needs to do is measure the original M-151 joints and then go to the chart and see if there is a match. Just some time on the computer researching and no more buying joints and hoping they will work. I do not have time right now to do that or I would have done it already.

Ok, gang, here we go.

My new tool. We'll be measuring a used U joint in fairly good condition.
