Turn Signal question.

Unread post by Bucolic » May 14th, 2018, 11:38 pm

What would cause my turn signal blink rate to increase? I noticed today that the blink rate has sped up and the indicating lamp in the column-mounted switch is dimmer than it used to be. What's up with that? The lamps on the corners, the actual turn signal lamps, all still work so the problem isn't a dead bulb.
I just went out and checked my turn signals. They still all work but I can't really call it flashing, it's more like a flicker. Both sides do it, so I'm guessing my flasher unit under the dashboard has gone out or is going out. Does that sound about right?

It could be going bad but if it is an electronic type they are usually either good or bad with no in between, Check the ground wire for good contact on the flasher unit on the floor. Also loosen the clamp on the column unit just a hair and move it back and forth a little to get a better ground there for that light just to be sure on that one and retighten the clamp. If none of that works you will need to check the grounds on all four corners.

Each mounting bolt for those composite lights acts as a separate ground. Each individual bolt has to make good contact with the body.

So what your saying is every bolt that connects a turn signal unit must have a proper ground?
Also rick you keep talking about a ground for the flasher unit on the floor ! I have no wire in my NOS harness that applies to the flasher unit.
What am I missing?
I've said it before, I SUCK at electrical !!! I wear that badge , and I own it!

One of the wires coming out of the unit should have an eyelet on it and that one goes to one of the screws that hold the unit to the floor. If there are no extra wires then be sure the case is touching a bare spot on the body somehow. If the lights are all on then the grounds at each light are good, scratch that off the list. It sounds like a bad flasher unit, do you have another to check it with? You do not even have to mount it, just clamp a jumper cable to the mounting pad and the pother end to the negative battery terminal. Them plug in the wires and try that one. If that one works then clamp the ground to the mount of the one in there and hook the wires back up, if it works you have a bad ground. If it does not work you have a bad flasher unit.

I recently experienced the problems of bad ground on the bolts that hold the turn signal lights on. Yes if you take the front lens off you will see 2 separate gnding wires, 1 coming from each bolt. Mine actually was causing the wrong bulb to flash because the grounding was bad. The little tooth washers broke when I tried to tighten the mounting bolts. Bought 2 new washers and all lighting issues went away.
