fording kit question
I have a new fording kit that has a lot of paint flaking off of both pipes and all of the painted brackets. I have sanded the intake pipe to bare aluminum and primed, it will get sprayed "383" same as the 151. The question is, the exhaust pipe is in the same flaking paint/surface rust condition and I'm sanding it down also. The pipe was originally primed in red oxide primer which is all being removed. Now I need to prime and paint the steel exhaust pipe, but do I use something that will withstand high heat like VHT or can I prime and paint "383" without having it burn away?
My paint is Gillespie 34094 "383" carc substitute.
Thanks,
CT

Re: fording kit question
Don't know how good the fake CARC paint will do but I used real CARC paint on the fording exhaust. It did hold good for a number of years and 5000 miles but now it is time to repaint it. I did not use any primer which I would think does not help in this high heat application.

Re: fording kit question
As for the aluminum pipe, painting aluminum takes a special primer. Without the primer, any paint will soon flake off again.

You will need a self etching primer for the intake pipe. I am not sure we can get real CARC here in the states, That is nasty stuff and requires a full pressurized paint suit! If you are painting the exhaust black then use stove paint from a wood stove store or grill store.

Re: fording kit question
Thanks for the input. I think I'll try the 383 and if if doesn't hold up, maybe paint from the tail pipe to the guard high temp black.

Re: fording kit question
Thanks, finally test drove today and could smell the paint burning on the tail pipe. I'll try the high temp black and maybe 383 over it or just leave it black. Not going for show points, just something that looks clean.

Re: fording kit question
Took the vertical tailpipe off and sanded off all of the burned paint and repainted with VHT flat black, looks good and won't burn off. Another friend used John Deere muffler paint which is a semi gloss high temp paint. I didn't feel like driving 20 miles to the Deere dealer to get a can and I had the VHT on hand.

Re: fording kit question
The muffler on my John Deere did not stay semi gloss for very long.

MUFFLERS GET HOT
A muffler painted gloss and semi gloss paint will not be gloss or semi gloss for very long.

I painted the muffler and pipe on my Massey diesel with wood stove paint ten years ago and no rust yet.
