Good news gentlemen. I don’t want to speak prematurely, but with your collective help, I have appeared to solve the fuel issue. The Chinese coil was junk, and all 3 of my new fuel filters were gummed up. I swapped them out and so far so good. I noticed that they are getting clogged up pretty quickly. Is it worth trying to open the drain on the fuel tank to drain it? I’m guessing it’s never been opened. I would hate to break it.

Your best be is going to be to take the tank out and either have it cleaned or do it yourself. just draining it is not going to get rid of the rust and debris in there. You really do not need the original filter if you are running the two others in front of it. What I did with mine was I ran a drill through the original and blew it out in both directions and flushed it with carb cleaner and reinstalled it so I still have the original look but don't have to worry about ever removing that one again. The aftermarket filters will work better than that one would have anyway.

Are you referring to the metal filter that screws directly into the carburetor, as the one I don’t really need?

Yes, Although it is supposed to be screwing into a brass fitting that screws into the carburetor. the carburetor does NOT have tapered pipe thread and the filter does. The brass fitting has straight threads and a nylon sealing washer and nut on the carburetor and tapered pipe thread for the filter on the other side. The fitting for the A1 is 90 degrees and for the A2 is 30 degrees. Those fittings for the A2 are getting hard to find. there is a plumbing fitting that will work for the A1 but the nut and gasket will have to be fabricated.

Thanks Rick. It seems TNJ Murray has the 30 degree elbow and the lock washer you speak of. Not sure if it is NOS, or something they fabricated. It doesn’t look 100% like the ones I’ve seen in pictures, but if it works I won’t complain. They appear to be the only company that has it. Hopefully I didn’t do too much damage to the carburetor threading the military filter in to the inlet.

Keep in mind that if you already had the filter threaded into the carb the threads in the carb will be enlarged and the new fitting will be a bit loos and will have to go in almost all the way. Do not tighten the nut too tight or you will pull the threads out. In your case it might be best to just put the filter back in as it was but do not tighten it too tight or you can break the carb housing.
