Re: Convoy MVPA Chicago to Santa Monica Rte. 66
Hi All:
I plan to participate in the Rte. 66 convoy in the 5th segment (Williams AZ to Santa Monica, CA); OCT9-OCT14 not including drive east to Williams.
I plan to have my '67 M151A1 ready, but if not, then I will be driving my '68 M35A2.
I will be coming out of Beaumont, CA and at this time my wife will be riding with me (but if I have to drive the deuce, probably not!).
Anyone else planning to go from SoCal, maybe we could convoy to Williams for security and mutual assistance?
Also, any of you long-time M151 owners please speak up for likely parts/repairs for a 950 mile trip...
NOTE: If you recommend any parts, you may post your preference for make/source. PLEASE DO NOT hijack this thread with discussion of "them vs. them" or arguments about parts. Preferences should be respected and in this thread I'd like to avoid sideways discussions. Please let's keep it on the topic of the convoy, preparedness, and who's going when and where.
THANKS VERY MUCH
-Ken J

i would recommend an ignition coil, and one of each type of u joints. fuel filter. headlight bulb. tools as needed for those repairs. if something else breaks along the way, such as other light bulbs, i have found that NAPA has a good array of 24v bulbs.ndcctrucks wrote:Hi All:

Re: Convoy MVPA Chicago to Santa Monica Rte. 66
From what I have been seeing in my diagnostics on peoples vehicle here and other sites there are more and more garbage parts coming on the market. Bad distributor caps and rotors being the latest items I have seen. I have also seen aftermarket swiss controls ignition units that apparently are not much better than the coils made by the Chinese. Spark plugs are something you should have at least a couple sets of and they are getting hard to find also, at least in the 2245 heat range. If the vehicle has not had the transmission seals replaced since you have owned it I would suggest doing so before going on the trip since it is NOT something you want to do in a parking lot! Same with the differential seals. These kits all come with wear sleeves that have to be used since the seals are sized for them. This is not something that will work out well in the field. It can be done but you will screw up at least on sleeve and probably more in the process. They do not give you extras. I say this because old seals tend to start leaking all of a sudden and a LOT of oil when they do.

199th MP and rickf:
THANKS for the advice! It should help anyone else with basic preparedness.
I am in the middle of a restoration, and planned to go through the t-case and trans.
I expect to bring a spare main light switch with all the things already mentioned. The switch on my M35A2 failed partially last month and while I was able to clean it and make it work again, that's not something easily done on a hotel room table. Gotta have lights when driving at night, convoy or no.
Some fluids like engine oil, trans oil, brake fluid, and coolant will also be going with me.
Best,
-Ken

ken, you should have a great time. i've been invited to go with another nam vet i know, but i will probably have to decline. i forgot to mention spark plugs, because i always had a set in my jeep no matter where i went. i would also agree with rick to change the seals out on your differentials. i did both of mine, which is a lot easier on the bench, and i still had to get an extra sleeve from Fil to replace the one i botched.

They are not the right rear shocks, mounted upside down and way to long. There is no travel left and you are at full suspension travel. If you jack it up from the diff the springs will fall out I bet. That would be a rollover special if you drove it that way.

OK thanks. I was thinking it was not right; I still have to disassemble the suspension for the work, and planned to buy new shocks all around.

Re: Convoy MVPA Chicago to Santa Monica Rte. 66
Greetings,
I plan on retiring Jan 1 2017 and will make the trip as well. I am planning to go the full route starting from Boston. The last trip had U-HAUL support for trucks and trailers getting to from the starting place and returning home from Cal. Will this one have it as well? I plan to tow a M-416 and convert it to a pop up tent. This will keep me off the ground and keep expenses down. Any designs as out there?
Thanks

OP update:
Sadly, I will not have the M151A1 ready. Life (work, especially) keeps getting in my way.
Still expect to make it, though.
See you!
