That is what the Prestolite modules do. That is why I tell people to steer away from them.

Please send me this module, I will pay the shipping. I am trying to reverse engineer why these fail and need one good one and one bad one to test. Obtaining one with the potting already gone will make this much easier!

Nice write up TJ. Still do not understand why you had to change the cap to get things working correctly. Was the rotor in the same position as the prestolite one? I would think the indexing would be the same with both modules, and rotors. It is possible that the old cap had a carbon track, and with the new module you had a hotter spark and the carbon track conducted and was shorting out 1 cylinder.

I never did figure out exactly what the difference was. But with these changes I finally exorcised the gremlin that had been plaguing me from the very first day of ownership. I was more in a mood to celebrate than to engage in a forensic analysis.
