Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
Gentlemen I'm in need for a heavy duty engine head and spark plugs. Would like to keep a HD head on standby.

Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
So whats the difference between an HD head and a normal head for these???
Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
Easiest way to tell is the size of the exhaust boss areas. See pics here -agwrangler wrote: ↑October 9th, 2019, 2:37 pmSo whats the difference between an HD head and a normal head for these???

Newer Style hardened for unleaded gas.
Old style for leaded.
Conventional wisdom (I'm catch phrasing it Rickdom) is the old style will wear out faster than new with unleaded. Some recommend to add a fuel additive to reduce wear.

Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
So if you use AVGAS then it really wouldnt matter, i assume.
Very interesting, thanks for the help with that.

Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
I made the mistake (once) of running unleaded in a Chevy straight 6 without hardened valve seats and it just hammered those poor things right into the dust. Lead additive. That's the ticket. Makes the exhaust stink, but it works.
Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
Of coarse what he is not telling you is that he was hammering on the engine to help it along. The old style head will run on unleaded just fine for the short runs and slow speeds that most of us run. If you are really cranking it then yes, you should look into hardened seats. And not all avgas has lead in it. 100LL has very little lead. Raymond would be the person to address that since he is in the gasoline business. Avgas is also 100 octane and will burn slower since it is designed for high compression engines. Therefore you will lose a bit of power and will probably get that famous flat spot back or make it worse if you already have it.

I know this thread is old, but looking at the pic's they appear to be he same. ? I dunno ?
Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
Look at the 4 bolt locations for the exhaust manifold on the bottom of each picture. Notice the beefiness of the 4 of the top picture versus the slimmer 4 on the bottom.

That makes it a Heavy Duty Head ? I was looking at the Exhaust ports ect. I guess I was expecting maybe a Performance head. Thanks Surveyor.!!
Re: Heavy duty head and spark plugs needed
That's just a way to tell it is heavy duty. It is hardened such as valve seats, etc. which they say make it better for today's unleaded fuel.
