Transmission oil specs
I have been reading past posts on manufacturer of 80W90. Rickf, M3a1, and Raymond y’all have specs listed. The following picture is a Shell product that checks all the boxes....I think. Comments welcome. Thanks

You might want to try Pepboy's. Looks like they carry it and might be cheaper.

it is the heavy load class oil

Hello George....
if you click the image of the oil bottle, you will see the "MT-1" in the specification list. This usually means that the oil is safe to use in old transmission-transfer boxes.

i have made contact with SHELL technical oil advice holland
this oil has a big amount ofsulfer all GL 4 and GL-5 contain it
the MT-1 stands for it can be used at a Manual Transmission
this is special for not european made truck gearboxes like USA made
they advice the GL-1 EP 80-90 mineral oil
they do not sell it in Holland

Well.....did get the new oil in transmission. After considerable research. Review of comments. I made what I consider a scientific decision. We are all aware we must “follow the science”. I flipped a coin. No seriously I recently talked to a friend that is “big time” into antique farm tractors. He uses

So now my mighty four speed has 5 1/2 pints installed. Have driven twice. About 20 miles each time. No leaks thanks to new seals, gaskets, and #3 permatex. The little scratch shifting to 3rd has disappeared. Has been quiet a while since driving a Jeep in Army, but I “think” most had that little scratch shifting in to third. Bottom line....I am happy with the results. Keep them rolling. Remember, let’s all enjoy the moment. LLee

My guess is that you are trying to get into third too fast and you are hitting reverse on the way in. Pop it out of second, take your time moving over to third and line it up and push it in. Remember, these transmissions are 75 year old technology.

True about the 75 year old transmission. My 70+ body needs careful attention also. I will slow down those shifts.

For a follow up on transmission oil. The 90w mineral oil for “old Ford farm tractors” is better than expected. Getting close to 200 miles of driving since repairs and fresh oil. Five star review. Very pleased.

My advise on using API GL1 through GL3 rated oils is "caveat emptor" or "buyer beware".
The API considers API GLG1 through GL3 oils to be obsolete.
They no longer do any testing of such oils to ensure compliance.
In fact, the equipment they used for such tests no longer exists.
When you buy such oils, you are not only trusting the blender of the oils, but all the suppliers the blenders use to supply base stocks, additives, etc. that conform to the original formulas.
The API considers API GLG1 through GL3 oils to be obsolete.
