Wire harness 1966 A1
I have a 1966 A1. #10950 80 front harness and the original rear harness #109509 81 . The rear harness has seven wires that goes up through the small hole in the firewall and plugs to the main harness. i have these these six wires accounted for 22-460,22-461,21,23,24,28. one wire does not have a tag . I'm thinking it might be #490 trailer feed blackout ? not sure , if it is the 490 wire, what does it plug to ? thanks Ken
Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
Coming out of the plug in section you should have 22-460, 22-461, 24-490, 21, 23 and 77. The gas gauge wire #28 appears to come straight from the dashboard.
The trailer wires all plug into the rear harness back in the rear fenderwelll

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
Hello rickf Thanks for the info. the unmarked wire must be 22-490 and looks like it goes to the light switch. not sure where it plugs to yet as the wiring diagram in my TM 9-2320-218-20 is a remake manual and some of the numbers are very hard to read.

You just hit the magic number of ten posts so you should now have access to PM's so PM me your e-mail and I will send you a better copy of the wiring diagram.

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
On my foot starter switch i have a #5 and two #6 wires as the diagram show's, but i have a #10 wire in the switch also. the circuit chart says #10 is battery feed to instrument panel. I don't see a #10 anywhere on the diagram. anyone else have a #10 wire in the starter switch ?
Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
That is an old wiring harness! I am surprised it is still in one piece. That was used in the early straight 151.
If you download the -20 manual from here dated 1960 (g838_manuals/TM%209-2320-218-20%20jul60.pdf) and go to page 136 you will see the wiring diagram for the old series and that shows the #10 wire from the starter switch.

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
hi
It seems you have a wiring harness for a late A1 the early A1 does not have wires for direction lights.
in that case the numbers should be as follows:
21 service tail
23 blackout stop
24 blackout tail
28 sending unit fuel
77 electric fuel pump
the two wires 6
one from the batteries at the starter switch together with wire`s 5 and 10
the other 6 from the starter switch to the starter at the starter also a wire 77 B to the safety switch
i do not know exactly when the A1 got the direction lights
if they are there it should be as follows
22-460 right rear turn /stop light
22-461 left rear turn / stop light
at the trailer plug wire 24 is splitting to 24 A - 24 B and 490
good luck george

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
Thanks for all the help ! Now this is starting to sense. Maybe they were using up the early harness's and adding the directional wires ?
Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
What year is your A1? Do you have the HUGE turn signal control on the floor? The turn signals came in with the first A1. I doubt they would have been patching together wiring harness's, that would just take to long on an assembly line. I know they added signals to a few early straight 151's. Is yours a straight or an A1?

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
Hello rickf and others ! It's a A1 The DOD 1-66 .The front harness tag #10950 80 It did not have a controller when i got the A1 so i bought one and a harness pn 11630528 . As for the controller I'm not sure what was on it cuz the numbers on the main harness are,22-460,A,B,J,K,L. At this point I'm not sure what I need to do to make these wires work with my new controller and harness . thanks Ken

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
hi
can you let me know witch controller / flasher unit and switch you have
the wire harnass 10950980 is the front A1 with turn signals
the wire harnass 11630528 is special harnass to put at a M151 /A1 turn signals
meybe i can made you a diagram with a A2 flasher and directional switch
if i know the wire numbers you have
which wire numbers are at the harnass coming from the rear ?
which wire numbers are from the front harnass to the rear?
which wire numbers are at the distribution box wiring ?

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
hi
if you have the front harnass number 10950980
the rear harnass 10950981
special harnass 11630528
it is posseble you can connect the special cable 11630528 at the front harnass 10950980
the connection is at the control box wires
a A2 flasher unit and A2 directional switch is needed
if the rear has directinal lights
at the wiring to the rear 460 go at right stoplight wire 461 go at the left stoplight wire
if not
the normal stop light wire is one wire to the rear and split
so you can only use this wire for one side
a new wire must be used for the other side
this is also at the trailer plug

This is why whenever I have a particularly vexing electrical problem I contact George!
KWB, It would be great if you could show us some pics of the vehicle. Front shot and rear shot especially showing the right rear tail lights. It is sounding like you have a straight 151 regardless of the 66 A1 plate, they get changed around a lot for titling reasons. Once we know what you are actually working with that will make things a bit easier.
An A1 has raised humps on the front fenders with a reinforcing plate under the fender for the turn signals and in the rear on the right side there is a third light that is above the right tail light. This is the blackout brake light. The straight 151 did not have either of these but a lot of people drilled holes in the fenders and bolted the lights directly to the fenders. The floor drains on a 66 are scallop drains near the rear of the front floorboard and the straight had oval drains in the center of the floor. There were a few more differences but they are the obvious ones. 1964 was the transition year to the A1 and some A1's still had the old floor drains but they did have the third brake light.

Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
Hello rickf ! I just sent George all the numbers he requested . I'm not sure but I think my main problem is the numbers/letters at the controller box. yes, I'll get some pictures posted for you. Thanks Ken
Re: Wire harness 1966 A1
Hello rickf and all !
Pictures of my A1. And one bonus picture of a 42 GPW I rebuilt for my wife three years ago for my wife. I'm not aloud to drive it much, only when I service it. If my A1 runs half as good as the GPW I'll be happier than a pig in poop. We did it as a tribute to her uncle who was killed in Germany 9/21/42 . I stenciled his unit numbers on front and rear.
