You DO know the bendix on those starters will not retract unless the motor starts and spins it in right? You can't get it in on the bench without using a wire wheel on a grinder and trying to spin the bendix.

I have to admit that I did not know that fact some time back. I even disassembled the bendix to retract it. Only a few hours later I found out that this is the way that thing is designed. Can be irritating to someone.

I have read that once extended, to just install it that way and the flywheel engagement will force it to retract.. The PO said that the starter was not working and he "cleaned up some rust" and it works for a short period of time. When I put batteries in it and hit the starter foot switch, I could hear the Bendix just spinning, but not engaging the flywheel. Put in a second take out starter the the PO supplied and it did the same thing, so just took both up to our starter shop to have them both checked out.
Visual inspection of slywheel looks good, so hoping it is just a starter issue. Both starter had the Bendix about 1" from the end of the shaft, so I don't know if that is extended or retracted.
