Distributor question

Unread post by Rossco » August 5th, 2021, 7:07 am

Hi all

Probably this question has been asked before now but other than a set of breaker points can an electronic distributor be converted to a "points" distributor? If not then other than a set of points what other parts are required ?
I have a second distributor and would like to have it set up as a spare should my swiss electronic unit decide not to play at some time!!

I already have a set of new points, capacitator and a good U.S. made coil so just need to know what other parts are required

I'm in the process of converting a couple of mine "back" to points. They were originally electronic module from day 1. I've had to change the cam as the lobes were square cut and the points need a smooth ramp.

It's easy to convert back to points set up, if you have the swiss ignition, you will need points, points plate, condenser and a new rotor, with the prestolite ignition, you will have to change the points cam also, but the rotor is the same, if I remember correctly.

Is there a civilian part number for a new rotor ?

Not sure about a civy crossover but the rotor was used in several M series, m151 m38 m37 m715 etc.

I can't seem find one. Vin says there are 2 different types. One for electronic ignition, the other for points.

The Prestolite electronic ignition rotor is the same as the points rotor. The Swiss controls rotor is different. The Prestolite is a magnetic inductive pickup and the Swiss is hall effect so the rotor on the swiss controls is also the hall effect window.

Well, I am not a expert, but the rotors have a larger flat and a smaller flat area push on types of rotors. Points vs. electronic ignition.
When did these "swiss" parts come into play in the U.S. ? Is this a after market part ? Any pic's of a Swiss version. Thanks !!

check your 151, you might find another Swiss Controls part on it. And apparently you can see that those parts come from the heart of automotive production in the US...

Swiss controls. Michigan City. Indiana. So, a Swiss part is not referring to a Swiss part from Sweden. :?:

Rick, Respectfully going to correct your statement. The prestolite uses the reluctor method, like some old fords do. The swiss controls is not hall effect. The swiss controls is an optical system that uses a "chopper wheel" with a optical source on one side and a photo detector on the other side like OMC outboard motors use to use.

A Swiss part would be from Switzerland, not Sweden.
