Hood number ?

Hello all!
I just bought a good used hood, it has black markings on it, US ARMY and the hood number. what units used black? thanks

I don't think it was a unit thing, it was someone's idea of "subdued" markings. I am pretty sure black was never actually used for markings other than the bumper markings. Hood markings were eliminated with the subdued theme and the hood number was moved inside on the dash and it was in black in there.

There was a short period of time between the introduction of the M151A2 (1970-71) and the introduction of the 4-pattern camo in August 1975 when matt black stars and hood numbers were used. It isn't codified in any TM ot TB I've seen, but it was used so it most likely was a Command decision.

Here's an example from a US Army leaflet. I have a couple of pictures of A1s using black also...Vietnam era.

Look at that picture and the group of people in it and tell me what is wrong here. If that was the early 70's I see promo written ALL over that shot. And the paint appears to be wet (look at the tires) on top of shiny with a dry paper map on it and dry people all around and no top.
