Metal shavings on trans mission plug

Unread post by tbh726 » August 7th, 2021, 10:52 pm

I was replacing my oil in the transmission, i noticed that the 2 drain plugs had some metal shavings on the magnetic end. There was also some on the filler plug. When i drained the oil there was no metal in the oil that drained. i put in new lucas 80 - 90 gpl5 mp1 gear lobe. I included some photos of it on the filler plug. does this mean i have issues in the transmission?

thanks

tim

That is a pretty extreme amount of wear George! Tim, fuzz is what is expected on the plugs but what I am seeing there could be one of two things. It could be just what George said, pieces of gear teeth from grinding gears but that is a LOT of grinding or it could be a bearing going out. I would run it for the rest of the season and drain it again and see what you have. If it is not grinding and you get more metal that it is time to tear it down and check the bearings.
