What spare parts should i have on hand

Unread post by tbh726 » August 22nd, 2021, 9:00 pm

it seems that one part everyone says to keep on hand is a coil. It also seems that most people have a spare distributor, but one with points and condenser. Going to add them to the wish list, but not really sure what else... Everything in the mutt seems to be in pretty decent shape, it is the coil thing that i have read about in here as one of the things that does go out and one that is hard to find. in fact only original coil i can find anywhere is a take off from TNMurry. i see the china ones are junk, and then there are these newer ones, but they burn up electric ignition, but not points. So i am also leaning to replacing distributor. or buying a TO to just have on hand...

what does everyone keep on hand as spare parts?

i kept some things that you might consider. a set of spark plugs, two u-joints for the drive shafts, two u-joints for the prop shafts, you already know about the coil, and spare plug wires. i carried them in a box mounted to the rear fender, and had the tools needed to do the work wherever i was. like most guys, i had a bunch of stuff at home, but they were good deals that i bought whenever i saw them. what i carried was for typical roadside stuff. i got this habit when i ran M151's in vietnam for convoy escort work. i had no interest in being stranded on the road out there.

I have several ammo cans that I mount on each rear fender top and put one on the floor.

In one I have:

Anti Freeze
Engine Oil
Gear Oil
Brake Fluid
Windex
Paper towels
Used (but good) top and bottom radiator hose
New Water Pump

In the other:

NOS Fuel Pump
Tools (Pretty good assortment)
Carb Rebuild Kit

And the last:

NOS Capacitor
NOS Points and Condenser
Spare Fuel Filters
Length of Rubber Fuel Hose
(2) NOS Coils
Used Plug Wires
Used Plugs
Drive Shaft Universal
NOS Upper & Lower Ball Joint
RTV and Electrical Tape

At home I have several radiators, spare gaskets, NOS wheel cylinders, NOS u-joints, bolts, several NOS electronic ignitions and other NOS and used items that I've picked up at shows. While my items that I take in the truck might seem excessive, I put a lot of miles on it and want to be prepared. And, at times I'm with other 151's so the buddy system is nice if someone has an issue. It's also trailered several hundred miles to events and if I have an issue, I want to fix it and keep going.

Yup, I have a stick too, also used to adjust my passenger mirror as I have to fold mirror in to get in the garage.

And nobody has mentioned the one thing that should be in EVERY box, DUCT TAPE and mechanics wire.!!!!!!

I have a couple ammo cans, one has a spare distributor with points that is set up and ready and has an index mark on it so I can just drop it in and it will be timed and ready to go. This way if I have an issue with the coil or module I do not play around with it on the road, just swap and go and diagnose later. I do carry a couple coils, Chinese, a spare Swiss module and rotor, a distributor cap, several inline fuel filters and a cheapie 24 volt electric fuel pump. I have an A1 with the in tank pump so if it goes out I need the electric pump to get gas to the carb. Basic hand tools, waterless hand cleaner and a roll of shop towels.
And my cell phone and Triple A card.

What you need to carry with you would depend upon where you are going and what you are doing. There's a world of difference between fleeing the legions of the undead, doing Camel Trophy stuff and just running errands around town.

Your MUTT is an exceptionally well thought-out vehicle. Bring it back to spec, maintain it, treat it with respect, and you will find that it will present you with very few problems. After all, it was designed to go to war.

The most important things are....

Preparedness,
Familiarization with your particular vehicle,
Being dedicated to the execution of the five 'P's' (prior planning prevents poor performance positively),
Shakedown runs BEFORE committing to long, arduous trips,
Having a way to charge your cel phone,

.....and having a way to poop in the woods with some small manner of civility without having to cut the seat out of your underwear.

Because you never know....

You could carry everything you could ever possibly need for you vehicle, but then you'd need a trailer, and another trailer to carry the stuff needed to rebuild your first trailer!

Or you can just do the work in the comfort of your own garage (with a large fan and a refrigerator filled with...)

I was a traffic cop for many, many years. The number one, most recurring thing folks needed when they were broken down was FLUIDS...and perhaps even more importantly, a way to carry them. Having gallon jug of water, or gas, or transmission fluid (and a way to get those fluids into the vehicle is often what makes all the difference. I carried several empty plastic jugs in the trunk of my patrol car along with a couple different funnels...all of which cost me nothing because I found them along the freeways. So, I was forever giving stuff I got for free away to needy, under-prepared travelers.

In any case, it sounds as if you are on the right track.

Cheers,
TJ

The biggest problem with the M151 is the fact that you can't just walk into the local parts store and get what you need. With very few exceptions most of the parts on a 151 are not available in the civilian market and those that are will not be available since they are for antiques.
