What is this for?

Unread post by 09FordRanger » October 2nd, 2021, 3:49 pm

Folks,
Just started working on a newly acquired 66 MUTT. A1 version. Checking and changing fluids. Started with the rear differential. Climbed under and started with what I thought might be the drain plug. But I guess it wasn't cause when I opened it nothing came out.

OK, that's not the drain plug (I did find, open, and draining it) but now I am wondering what this plug I took out is for. I have a feeling that it serves a purpose but I haven't a clue. I suspect some kind of lubricant was supposed to flow/ooze out.

Any thoughts/insights would be appreciated.

That is where the Brush Guard is bolted on when the Differential is mounted on the front of the truck.

OK. Now that is something I may have figured out in about 12 years. Thanks. I have a feeling I will have more than a few more questions as I go along. Really do appreciate guys like you.
BTW, when were you with 2ACR?

You beat me by about 15 yrs. Served in 3/12 CAV from 79 to 82. We were Div CAV for 3AD and supported 11th. I was in swinging Budingen. Still was part of the misery patrols along the East/West border (always seemed cold and wet). Gonna put my old bumper #'s on what I plan will be my daily driver (in good weather).
Nice to know there's some of the Cold War Cav guys still around. Perhaps we will cross paths someday "Halfway down the trail to Hell, in a shady meadow green . . ."

I moved out to Colorado in mid 73, lived down in Canon City and joined the Colorado Army Guard, got a full time job with them working at Carson till 81 when I moved back to Baltimore MD; I still come out there every few years to visit friends, love the Mountains. 8)

I live up in Woodland Park. My MUTT will be patrolling that town searching for burgers and beer.

I have a good friend in Hartsell, we make it up there about once a year, there was a guy in your area that owned an Encore jeep, I would see it sitting outside an auto repair shop.

I had a good friend that lived in Woodland park off Thunder Ridge Dr. back in the mid 70s 8) also back in 65-66 I dated a young lady that lived in Cascade, her family had a Motel + 5 or 6 Cabins where the Happy Trails Vacation Rentals is now. :D
