I don't recall ever seeing a gasket when removing a 151 starter but, it shows 1 in the TM 20P & 34P so I will say it's the same thickness as the Bellhousing to Motor and the Transmission to the Bell and the lower flywheel cover gaskets, they are there to stop/slow down water intrusion into the Clutch/Flywheel area when Fording. Just my understanding.

Thanks for everyone's input. just found them at TNJ Murray. cheap enough but ten bucks shipping tells me to cut one. I was just thinking proper starter set back even though 0.030 probably don't mean squat' water deterrent sounds logical

I would say if you don't drive the mutt submerged in 2 feet of water, it would not be needed.

And even then the clutch cover gasket and clutch rod boot seals would have to be perfect and you would have to remember to put the fording plug in. Chance of all of that happening are about zilch. I have never seen one with a gasket.

There is a gasket under both the distributor and the adapter, If either is missing you will have a nice oil leak.
