Oil leak at flywheel cover

Unread post by 1SGCAV77 » November 4th, 2021, 2:25 pm

Looking for advice on replacing gaskets on flywheel cover. The old rubber gasket is harder than concrete. The NOS gasket kit comes with new flat rubber gasket. Asking for “the trick” to hold that rascal in place while installing cover. Thanks in advance.

Pick up a can of High Tack, only put it on one side of the gasket, works great. :D If you have a oil leak there it's a bigger problem!

If you have oil coming off of the cover at that gasket but none coming out of the drain hole in the cover then you are probably leaking from the valve cover and running down. Or out of the back of the oil pan gasket. There is no oil behind that flywheel cover. those gaskets are to keep water out when fording.

My mutt had oil leaking there and it was the rear main oil seal leaking. Had to remove the power pack and transmission to replace the seal. Has been great since the repair.

A rear main leak will run onto the back of the flywheel and be slung around the inside of the bell housing and should run down to the bottom of the housing cover. I can see a rear pan leak showing up there but the only way a rear main would show there is if that housing cover had no seal in it. Even then it would still have to be coming out the bottom from the oil slung to the bottom of the housing. That was what mine did.
