WTB 25 amp generator

Unread post by Horst » February 5th, 2022, 4:47 pm

I am looking for a good source in the US for the 25 amp generator and regulator. I need it for a M44 on the West Coast, shipped by end of the month.
Ideally also need an airpack rebuild kit (long style)

posted on Steel Soldiers, one reply was that I should convert to a Delco 24V alternator.

There is a conversion cable made just for that that was originally made for converting the trucks. It has since been used on the 151 but needs to be cut down quit a bit. Although a lot of the ones I have seen they just looped the extra cable all over. I am open for doing that on mine, depends on which generator or alternator I find.
On rereading your post I see you mention the Delco alternator. That is an option and probably a better on if you are not worried about originality. I was thinking the standard 24 volt military alternator. The civilian ones are a lot more robust as far as standing up to voltage spikes than the military ones with the weak regulators. I never understood why they would make a bulletproof alternator and put in regulators that could not stand the slightest spike.

Good Evening Everyone:

I recently bought an M-151, it came with some spare parts. I believe that there are 2-3 generators. I know one is a 60 amp and I believe the rest are 25's When I get to the shop in the morning I can check.

Regards,

Walter

Good Morning Everyone:

I have three 25 amp generators. One is a Rett, with a P/N of 7524310 and a mil spec number of: Mil-G-12604. The other two are Prestolites. Their Mil Spec numbers are the same except they have a C suffix. Their P/N's are GHA-4804CUT and have an Ord Number: 10950808. They are used take offs.

Regards,

Walter

Good Afternoon Horst and Rick:

I and the generators are located in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, about 65 miles NE of Pittsburgh. The town is Indiana, PA and is the hoke town of the late, great actor Jimmy Stewart. I will probably keep one of them as a spare, but I sure dont need three spares.

Regards,

Walter

Well, That used to be a day trip for me a few years ago but I just can't do 12 hour drives anymore. Would you be interested in selling the 60 amp? I plan to replace the wiring harness in my 151 and I am going to use a later harness and a 60 amp would make it all a bolt in.

These trucks don't stop to amaze me. Truck was sitting for years. Fresh batteries and within less a second on the starter it fired right up into a stable idle.
Need to pump the brakes as there was/is air in them.

Problem I have (and this truck had before years ago) that it will idle high once it warmed up. Unfortunately I don't know anything about them and an injector pump is a bit more complicated than our piece of junk Zenith carbs.

There is a lot of info on Steel Soldiers about the multifuel engines. The injection pumps on them are pretty basic as far as diesel pumps go but I personally do not have a lot of experience with them. I do know the governor will gum up after sitting for a long time as one I helped a guy get running was close to running away and I choked it off but after a couple of starts and panic shut downs it started to respond to the throttle and after a couple of hours of running and him moving the throttle up, down constantly it finally got to the point it would idle. At that point he took off and drove it straight through from NJ to Alabama! That is about 20 plus hours in a deuce! And that was After we screwed with getting it running and dealing with all the other issues like brakes and stuff like that.
So I would say that unless it is really screaming to keep working the throttle and see if that drops it down a bit. Also check to be sure the hand throttle is not holding it or if there is an air throttle solenoid for a pump?
But check out the deuce section on Steel Soldiers for more info on the injection pumps.
