Gas gauge is not working- Gas wood measure stick

Unread post by tbh726 » February 20th, 2022, 10:30 pm

I have read and seem to remember people talking about using a wooden stick to measure the gas in their tank. I have a 79 151a2. Can someone tell me the length of the stick they have and where they are marking it for say 1/4 tank or 1/2 or whatever you are using. i replaced the gas sensor in the tank, but it still says it is empty.

thanks

hi

you can also repair it

take the wire from the sensor
if it is off the meter must go to full
if yes put the wire to ground the gauge must go to empty
if not look if the gauge has power at wire no 27
put a wire to get the dashplate at ground
take wire 28 from the gauge it must go to full
if you put the 28 at the gauge at ground it must go to empty
if there is a short to ground at the wire to the sensor it will set the gauge to empty

let us know what happens

cool and thanks for checking your stick... yes saw another article where even the new ones do not have the correct resistance and that the wire your talking about is needed. now i will need to test that, hopefully it only needs the wire, but having the stick cant hurt...

thanks

I removed my fuel sending unit and attached a test lead to the ground ( test wire had alligator clips on both ends).
With the circuit powered/live I moved the float arm and watched the gauge to see the needle move across the full range.
The old sending unit had managed to bunch all the wires up near the top / full side.
The 1983 vintage NOS replacement had some issues with light corrosion on the wires and took some "cycling" of the float arm to read consistently.
I also noted the float arm was assembled differently and would easily allow the wiper to loose contact with the wrapped wires.
I ended up gluing the float arm (round steel rod) into the plastic fitting and that made everything work as intended.
Now the challenge is paying the $4 a gallon for non-ethanol blended fuel to fill the tank!

I also added star washers to 3 of the machine screws that attach the sending unit to the fuel tank to make sure I had a solid ground thru the paint.

There is an additive to put in the gas to eliminate the effects of the alcohol -Star*tron.Even when buying regular gas, there could
be alcohol in it.
