Re: WTB: Fill Device
I got a fill device off ebay a while ago. I can't remember what the nomenclature is of the one I have. I don't really want to part with it but wanted to show they do come available from time to time.
Re: WTB: Fill Device
Alright, Alright! What the hell is a fill device? I always figured it was a funnel or spout for a gas can.

Re: WTB: Fill Device
I don't know the exact technicals but it is basically is a code generator for secure mode on the radios. All the radios need the be given the "fill" from the device so it can talk to the other secure radios. I am pretty sure they were not used when the unit upgraded to singars. We had a lot of problems with radios loosing the fill and having to be refilled with the file device.

OK, That explains it.
Still sounds like a damn funnel to me!

Re: WTB: Fill Device
The Vinson stuff is being surplused off now that the VRC-12 family of radios is officially obsolete as of October of last year. Thats when the national guard announced it had completed replacing them with the current ICOM stuff. The newer radios have the scramblers built in and use OTAR (over the air rekeying) to change codes or a network control device that changes the net all at once. I have a fill device for the newer sincgars radios but it wont work with the older VRC-12 stuff. The KY-57 had 6 key positions. 1-5 were variables that had to match other radios to decypher voice transmissions. The 6th slot was the key to change the other 5 over the air... not that I'd know about that of course....

Re: WTB: Fill Device
Rick, if you don't find the "grease" then I'll need the "key" for the "hydrostatic lock"
I will be away from the computer for a week or so, my X is in the Hospital and not doing very good and my Sons are upset that I'm not there so, I'll be heading back up to Balto.

Re: WTB: Fill Device
Ok let me think here? Moose you are Correct! The KY-57 was the main form of securing radios from the PRC-77 to the RTs 524 and 526 and 442 all the way up to the us of the MSE systems it was the reason for getting rid of the SOIs. Thats about all i can remember. Other than it was a PITA to load the KY-57. Its nothing like the Singars used today. they are even getting smaller. And For Dan didnt anyone tell you Ambulances and Arty dont mix. Nice M119 you got there. I got way to much time on them!!!!!!! from back at Campbell back in the 90s
Re: WTB: Fill Device
I was still at Campbell when Divarty went from M102 to the M119. I was in C Battery 5/8 FAR or the M198 155mm unit. I left for Korea in 1992 and was out by 1993. I think they started the change over just after we got back from Desert Storm.
