RF wheel locking up, screeching noise

Unread post by Mark » September 17th, 2022, 10:35 pm

I figured the the LF wheel brake was not working, so I pulled the drum, sprayed brake cleaner on the shoes. Also looked at the backing plate flat spots where the shoe moved on.They were dry with some granular specks of something on it.The shoes did not move back like they should. So I cleaned off the flat spots, put wheel bearing grease between the shoe and the flat spot.
Now the right wheel does not lock up/screeching noise. The mutt brakes like it should.
My PM has not been actively performed.
So I'll grease the other flat spots.I am not sure how to check spring tension other than with a gauge, but how many foot pounds it should be would be really hard to find.
These shoes system is ancient practice, the M151 vehicles makes it worse to find.
I suppose a brake shop is the best place to start.

Mark, as I recall, your brake springs and most of the bits are exactly the same as can be found on a Ford 1970 Galaxy 500. Those kits are still readily available and VERY inexpensive. My memory is a little bad in that area so I would not go so far as to claim the wheel cylinders are the same but it sounds as though you don't need wheel cylinders.

Git after it!

Cheers,
TJ

I thought the springs were AMC parts? I will have to check the wiki.

Nope. Ford. I have purchased those kits and laid them out against what you can buy from the usual suppliers of M151 parts and almost everything crosses over. It'll have what he needs, I'm sure of that.
