Changing Out Fuel Lines on M151A2

Unread post by glcaines » May 1st, 2023, 9:39 pm

When I first acquired my M151A2, the main fuel line to the fuel pump broke in half while driving. Luckily no fire. I did a quick and dirty repair with a short piece of rubber fuel line. Later I found a supposed complete set of new fuel lines that was supposed to work for both the non-emission and emission variants of the A2. It didn't work out that way. The fuel line that broke had a direct replacement. One other line was a direct replacement. Everything else was either for pre-emissions A2s or were too short. I was able to use one of the new lines that was too short to connect to the tank, so I fabricated a 2" piece of tubing to lengthen it. The kit was actually very high quality, just not as advertised in application. Replacing the fuel line between the tank and pump was extremely easy. The other lines were a real pain to replace, trying to snake them up under the dash and through the holes in the firewall. I invented some new French words in the process! Anyone buying one of these one-size-fits-all fuel line kits should do more investigating than I did.

I usually just buy a long length of new line and use the old lines as patterns and bend up my own. Stay away from Stainless steel unless you really want aggravation, it is hard to bend and damn near impossible to flare unless you have high end hydraulic flaring tools. If you can find cupro/nickle tubing that is much easier to bend and also will not rust.
