M151A2 Jack

Unread post by glcaines » August 20th, 2023, 9:10 pm

What is the difference between the jack for the M151A1 and M151A2 jacks? I've seen jacks for sale that say they are for A1 and Early A2. Mine is a late A2 (1979). I know the NSN for the A1 jack is 5120-00-176-3460, but I don't know the NSN for the late A2 jack. I saw in one place that the jack for late A2 has a round base instead of rectangular, but I don't know if this is true or not or if this is even important.

I have seen several different designs of the scissors jack for the 151 all with the same NSN. I think it boils down to the manufacturer. I have seen narrow ones and wide (and rather heavy) ones. I have both. Just google M 151 Jacks and you will see quite the variety. Checking all of the usual NSN lists I do not see where it was ever superseded with another number or part.

Thanks Rick. I just talked to someone today that basically said the same thing you did. However, he also told me that the jack issued by AM General for late A2s had a round bottom because it was a screw jack and not a scissor jack. This was a guy I ran into when out in my A2 and I have no idea whether he was right or not. All I ever saw when I was on active duty back in the early 70s was scissor jacks, but that was all I remember. Also, close to 100% of my units M151s were A1s. We only received a few A2s. Thanks again.

Well, Looking at your list of vehicles in your signature I know you have been around this hobby long enough to know that there are so called experts all over the place. When I looked up the M-151 jack the only NSN that came up was the one you gave with the notation of no updates. And when you think about it, where is there a solid flat point to put a bottle jack on? I would call him out on that one and say to prove it.

Rick,
I was just looking at the March 1968 version of TM_9-2320-218-10 and on pages 3-21 and 3-22, the instructions and Figure 3-11 describe and show a screw-type jack with a ratchet. I think this type of jack is what the guy I ran into was describing. However, he said the screw jack was for later models, but apparently he was wrong, and the screw jack was for earlier M151 models. For what it's worth, I bought an NOS scissor-type jack from Army Jeep Parts.
