Clutch Shifter Detent Plug Gasket

Unread post by glcaines » November 14th, 2023, 7:49 pm

My M151A2 has a fairly serious oil leak that is coming from the clutch shifter detent plug. The plug is tight, but leaking. I have two problems / questions. The first problem I have is that the back of the lower portion of the plug is in contact with the frame and can't be removed to replace the gasket or copper washer. The TM calls it a gasket, but I suspect it is actually a copper washer. The second problem is that the parts TM doesn't even mention this component so I have no idea what the part number of the gasket is or what size it might be. To remove the plug I will have to raise the rear of the transmission to provide clearance for the plug to unscrew. Has anyone else run into this problem of inadequate clearance to remove the plug? Does anyone know if this is a fiber gasket or a copper washer and what the size might be? Once I get the plug removed, I can measure it but I would like to go ahead and have the part in hand prior to removal of the plug.

If it is hitting the frame then the transmission mounts also need to be replaced. Here is what I came up with from the -34P manual but you can probably go to the local NAPA with the old one in hand and get a replacement.

Thanks Rick. I looked and looked and didn't see that. I was wondering about the transmission mounts. The plug has actually dented the frame slightly where it is touching.

If the transmission mounts are bad you might want to check the motor mounts also. It is entirely possible that the way the plug was hitting the cross member it may have loosened it up, If so it probably beat the gasket up from banging in and out in the just slightly loose position while hitting the cross member. I have a box of copper gaskets with a rubber coating that are used for oil pans. That would probably work well for what you are doing. You should be able to get them at a NAPA or smaller parts store. Forget the big box stores where some kid will ask "what vehicle doe it go on". and then they punch it into a computer. If it does not come up then that person will say they do not have it. Or, when you tell them the vehicle you will get the deer in the headlight stare.

there is very little clearance between the plug and the body. I doubt I could remove the plug with the transmission bolted in place. Of course it should not touch the frame, so bad mounts is quite likely.

I went ahead and ordered a complete set of mounts from SECO. I'll try NAPA for the gasket when I get it out. Thanks for the suggestions.
