Oil cap gasket

Unread post by Sundawg3 » January 6th, 2024, 6:41 pm

Looked through this forum and technical manuals. I can find the oil filler cap but not the gasket. Anyone know the part number or where to buy?

The part number is: MS35769-18. It is in TM 9-2320-218-2O. You can also make a gasket yourself.

Glcaines,

That’s the part number for the crush gaskets on the transmission and differentials. It should be a rubber gasket right??

You are correct. I screwed up. I would recommend making one yourself.

The gasket "should" come already on a new cap.

I didn't want to buy a 30 year old cap and gasket so I found a great alternative. Continental aircraft engine oil cap gasket, part number 533355, fits well. It's a little sloppy on the center post but seals well and keeps the cap tight. They sell for $4.00-$5.00 at most online parts houses. Hope this helps others.

That's also a standard-sized cap.

You might just as easily gone and gotten a standard cap (like a Dorman product) and then transfer the gasket over. I would encourage everyone to avoid getting too far down in the weeds when it comes to stuff like this. It just makes for a bigger headache than it really ought to be.

A properly sized gasket is a properly sized gasket. End of story.

Cheers,
TJ

Dang,

I thought this forum was for people with similar interests in vehicles trying to help each other out. I'll keep my opinions and experiences to myself from now on. Bye.

We DID try to help you, Here is a standard oil fill cap you could have used as is for only a couple bucks. Paint it OD and nobody would know the difference. Or you could have bought the original cap that would have worked just fine. We appreciate when someone comes up with out of the box solutions but those solutions need to fit correctly.

There is no reason for anyone to get their feelings hurt. A penny saved is a penny earned and in this hobby, EVERY penny is needed. Thus, common sense solutions are (for the most of us) well received.

There are many learned members on this site, many of whom are logged on perpetually and see every post, every day. The key to success on the g838 is to be receptive to the ideas of others and offering insight and information that has come with personal experience.

What we are trying to do here is help the subscribers get their vehicles in order so that they may enjoy them and along the way, maybe have a few laughs. Would it be better to spend a week or two finding out about a particular part, then source it and pay through the nose for shipping as well as an exorbitant fee for the part and then wait a week or more until said part arrives....

or would it be better to be able to trot down to O'Reilly's, pick up a part and make the vehicle whole again?

That IS about helping each other out and as good as one idea is, there is always yet another idea out there.

These vehicles, as unique as they may seem, came from a long line of other vehicles and other designs and from the designers who worked on all of them. Manufacturers love pulling parts from parts bins and working those bits into their designs which is not only sensible, financially responsible but also saves the manufacturer money and helps with their bottom line.

That is precisely what I was doing; being sensible, helping a member figure out ways to save time, money and helping with the bottom line. It's not my responsibility but it is, morally, the right thing to do....so don't make it into something that it isn't. No one is here to beat anyone down. We're here to help others up.

Cheers,
TJ
