engine color

Unread post by snuffy » April 16th, 2009, 11:08 pm

The intake manifold on my early 151 is red. Also the cover over the thermostat is red. I always assumed that it had been "bubbarized", but before I paint these two items I got to wondering if they were supposed to be that color????

Your advice will be appreciated.

Only if it was originally owned by Bob Amon... :D Mutt engines were predominently either Satin Black or OD Green, with a few parts left unpainted, like the stainless steel manifold. No parts originally came in Red...

I appreciate the help. That's what I expected, but I wanted to be sure. And you told me something I REALLY didn't know.....the intake is stainless steel. I'll get that red paint off and leave it unpainted!

You know, I just remembered....when I first got this Mutt the valve cover looked like it was stainless. It was unpainted and bright metal????

Thanks again,
Mike

the valve cover should be painted... same color as the engine block. If its something other than stamped metal then it too is a bubba piece. Check out Mr. Dibbles posts, his engine is pretty much perfect, and should answer most questions you might have of how it should look.

I have taken engines right out of M151A2s that were at DRMO that had the dipstick painted red and the oil fill cap on the valve cover painted red. Never seen a red manifold though. In the early 90s the OHARNG switched over from 151s to M998s and the DRMO in Columbus wholesaled jeeps off in lots of like 800 at a time. The winning bidder had like 30 days to tear them up and either crsuh or mutillate the body. So I was able to get with a few other mutt owners at the time and we paid the guy like $50.00 each and we each got a 151A2 to tear up. I got all the parts I needed to put the A2 I was building at the time back together. Plus my buddies got spare parts for their jeeps. It was a win win for all because we got parts for cheep and the guy who had 800 or so jeeps to tear up in 30 days got a few jeeps taken care of that all he had to do is crush the bodys.

I'm restoring my A-2 and included the engine as well in the process. I chosen to paint my engine black since I'm going with the 383 color. Also it breaks up the green in the engine bay.

if you found any that had the red dipstick and filler cap that was a old motor pool guy thinking back to the way it was in the 1950's. The practise ended before mutts were put in service.

Well seeing that the mutts belonged to the Ohio National Guard I knew a few motorpool SGTs who started off as motorpool PVTs from the 50ths so it is possible some of them were carring on the tradition. I wouldn't post it if I hadn't seen it with both eyes...
