Opinions Needed

Unread post by Cobra5 » April 26th, 2009, 11:20 am

As I near completion of my A-2 I need help from the forum to decide if I go with the original data plate or have a new one stamped. The problem with the original plate is that it is sun faded from its time in the desert. I have replaced all the other stickers and plates because they were severly faded or missing . I don't have any intentions, at this time, of entering it in competion at shows. However, I don't want it to look as though I neglected a detail. This vehicle would most likely be put in the motorpool class restoration class. I know you guys are wanting to see pictures and I will try to get some posted soon.

What good is all that old money you have in the bank? Dust some of it off and get a new data plate....you know you want to. You have my permission......er, just don't tell your significant other I said that.

I personally enjoy seeing original data plates, but if all other plaqards are bright and shinny then I would think that it would only be appropreate and it would visually look better. Replace it, have the original framed and display it for others to see.

Hey Montana: I have to agree with Joe. It's nice to have the origional data plate but with every thing else looking soooo good why use it. Use a new plate with the same numbers and inspection stamp. Then FRAME the old one and hang it by the computer. But on the other hand it's your machine. :)

Hey Cobra5,

As you know, I have an opinion on everything, so here goes...

I enjoy seeing restored vehicles, jeeps included, with a "restoration book" of the begining, the work, and the result of that work sitting in person next to the photo album. If it were me, I'd get a new data plate to mount on the jeep, and put the original in the restoration book with the documentation of all your hard work. We all like pictures of restorations, and ask for them daily around here.

In my home town we have a cruise-in every Monday night. Theres a cool little guy named Mel that has a very old Studabaker pickup with his intro photo taken as he winched it out of an overgrown ravine. It's not a stock restoration, but it's hard not to appreciate his love for his truck, and the unbelievable amount of work he has invested.

New plate is the only way to go.

Thanks for your opinions. I really like the idea of framing the orignial and using it as part of a display. I have a new blank plate but before I spent the money to have it done I thought I would get a few opinions here.

I think the original tag is way better. It adds a lot more. New tags are nice and clean and pretty but I would vote for original....

Okay here are two photos to compare. The faded plate is really that light I didn't use a flash. Also you'll notice the tip of a screwdriver in the windshield hinge. I didn't want to struggle with installing and removing the pins. The new cowl seal is a real pitas! Also the hand throttle is vertical instead of horizontal. Please forgive me.

the new A2 plate is much prettier! Im going to change my vote! NEW plate and hang the old one up in the garage! :D

oh yeah.....my hand throttle moves to this position by itself. I always set it horizontal and by the time the ride is over, it moved itself back....
