Greenish/yellow brake fluid WTF??

Unread post by Cobra5 » May 3rd, 2009, 11:47 pm

Okay I got my brakes bled today and had a greenish/yellow fluid come out of the bleeders. As I recall the fluid in the master was the same color. So were/are there different colors for silicone fluid. I checked my bottle of dot 3 and its clear. I didn't have any dot 4 but since 3 and 4 are compatable I figured they are the same color.

In another post here you mentioned you bought some silicone fluid. The silicone fluid is purple so I can't quite figure what you might have. It could be contaminated DOT 3 but that is usually dark when contaminated.

I have never seen anything but purple for the military but then again I have not seen the newer stuff. Could it be DOT4?

Rick,

Here's a link I found about the different brake fluids. It mentions the greenish fluid. http://www.arcpress.com/tips/brakefluid.htm I think I'll press on with what I have and see if anything adverse develops. I may bleed some of the green out and mix with the purple to see if it will mix. Is it possible that this is some sort of preservative that the military put in for long storage. :?

My purple stuff came in a plastic bottle. The yellow stuff came in a metal can that is rectangular. I got a lot of the yellow stuff for cheap so that I would not have to pay retail for it for a while. I will try to take a look and see when it was made. The yellow stuff is most likely older surplus while my purple came in the tool box of a truck I bought off GL so it is a good bet the purple stuff is more recent.
