Quicksand and 4x4s

Unread post by sarmadq » May 27th, 2009, 1:29 pm

Hi all, as the title suggests, I wanted to know how well 4x4s deal with quicksand ?
Does the mass prevent it from sinking beyond the diffs?

I've found a new area to venture in, it looks like damp sand, some people say there is quicksand there so not many go. It could be a way to keep people out too (its public land and nothing private).
The terrain is too tempting to be left alone.

I plan to walk it 1st, with a big pole in hand and a spotter on high ground, just incase, just needed to know how the MUTT would behave if it starts to sink.

If it is actually quicksand the mutt would sink until it hit bottom. Keep in mind that "bottom" could be three feet or thirty feet! If you are going to walk it make damn sure you have one end of a rope in hand. Quicksand is not something to be taken lightly.

When one starts to sink in, one should throw the body back and lie parallel to the ground, thus increasing the surface area of the object sinking.
Same principle applies to the jeep, if the tire goes in and at speed you end up with all 4 in it, they shall sink till the bottom of the jeep hit the surface, after that the increased surface area shall prevent further sinking.

On the other hand, if one's slow on a track and only the front wheels go in, THEN there's a chance of it slowly creeping down the pit, 3 feet or 30 feet :) but enough time to bail out....... So Ken, looks like you'll be knowing me a lot more :)

That theory is no good! Your body has flotation, you can float on water. That is why you can "swim" out of quicksand. A steel vehicle has no flotation. If it will sink in water then it will sink in quicksand. I doubt I still have the pictures but we had a crane at a construction site run into some quicksand, six hours later only the end of the boom was visible. That was 40 some feet up!

I always thought quicksand was an urban myth. Next you're going to tell me that pickles come from cucumbers? I can only take so much in one day :)

This is like the chicken-egg theory.
Let us know the final outcome.
