Bill,Bill, Idaho wrote:I want the markings to reflect USMC, mid to late 70's, with a unit that would have utilized 4 color desert. Since this MUTT didn't appear to have any specific use, ie: TOW, communications, recoiless, etc, I would think that would assist in giving it a units designation.
there were two x 4-color desert patterns (red desert and gray desert). You can see the approximate appearance of each of these at:

Whichever pattern you have used, the rest is pretty straightforward.
1. In 2" letters at either side of hood is the USMC designation along with the serial number. As yours is an A2, the S/N most likely would have 6 numbers beginning with 5, as in 501234, so the hood would say...."USMC 501234".
2. The rear driver-side bumperette would have the 2" letters "USMC" and the passenger-side bumperette would have the 2" numbers "501234".
3. The front bumper carried neither USMC nor the serial number.
4. There were NO markings such as "HQ" or "HW" or similar unit designators.
5. Instead, there may have been a symbol (diamond, circle, half-circle, lozenge etc) with a number inside it...eg <353> which would have been the embarkation loading code number.
6. The USMC, S/N, symbol and code would have been in matt black.
7. The "DO NOT OVERFILL..." markings would have been 1", matt black letters.
8. TP 20 or TP-20 in 1" matt black letters & numbers centred over each wheel.
9. The markings above would most likely have been stencilled, but adhesive letters and numbers were authorized for use.
10 Appropriate manuals were MCO P4750-3B 3 Jan 1977 and NAVMC2666 3 Jan 1977.
Hope this helps........
