Tire Question

Unread post by csmith » November 25th, 2009, 7:27 pm

Since I am going to make me mutt a driver, hopefully taking her out about once a week, and have a spare set of wheels, I am thinking of putting a set of road tires on the Mutt. Question, I looked on the Wiki and found the radial size equivalent, but will the mutt wheels accept a tubless tire, tubless with a tube, or does the tire need to be a tube tire? Those military tires are pretty expensive, don't want to waste them on everyday hardsurface driving.

Good thread csmith. I want to do the same, but I think I'll put tubes in as the "extra" set of rims are rather pitted.

I have tubeless radials with no leaks but have heard that they can leak around the welds.

I have heard of others like Raymond that run tubeless with no problem. I would paint the inside of the rim over the rivets with a good epoxy paint and then go with the tubeless and see if they leak. If they do then just get a set of radial tubes for them. I am guessing they will not leak.

rickf mentioned to me that if you put epoxy paint on the inside of the rims, they should work for tubeless.
I have an extra set of rims on the way and am thinking of going with civie tires.

edit, sorry rick- we were posting at the same time

Thanks for the input guys. Two of my extra wheels are NOS still in the box, the other 4 are TO's off the mutt before the last owner put 4 new wheels and tires on and three are in excellent shape. I'll talk to the tire store and get their input also. For the cost of good epoxy paint and the time/effort to paint the inside of the wheels maybe $7-8 per tube is well spent as insurance against a flat. I'll keep everyone posted on how I proceed but it will likely be a month or two before get it done. Any recommendation as to what brand/style tire to go with :?: :?:

Raymond, how long have you been running your tubless?

Happy Thanksgiving to all. :)

Guys,
I use a full set of Michelin tubeless radials in addition to a set of NDCC treads that I switch on and off for parades, etc. and the radials have never leaked air in the 10 years that I have been using them. The ride is much better with the radials, too!

Joe, what size michelins do you use on your mutt? I assume that they are on the military wheels.

Since December 1997. Only one flat sine then, and it was a bad valve stem.

Clell,
I use Yokohama Geolander HT/S in my truck, a very nice tire for the road, quiet and light as a feather, good grip but expensive  I also want another set of wheels for the mutt but can't get the right size for this particular tire here.

The size is LT225 75 R16 (Michelin LTX M/S tires). The wheels are stock M151A2 and the tread width of these tires is just under 7 inches. When compared to the NDCC's, that's a lot of rubber meeting the road. :D :D :D

215-85-16 is the replacemant for the 7.00x16 NDCC tires. 235-85-16 is the equivelant 7.50x16 tire.
