Oh no, you pulled the plug, that too the wrong one..... Ken's been advocating so much about it here ........ I think you need to open up the tranny to pick up the fallen pieces.

Matt that's going to be one for the ages. I am sorry to hear that this mistake was made but you can sort through this. You will need to pull the powerpack out of the vehicle to get to the transmission. How was your transmission functioning beforehand? Was it in need for new syncro's or anything else? This may be a good chance to have a professional put it back together again with some new bits to rebuild it. Or you can do this yourself. Given that you need to crack the gearbox open the opportunity will present itself to address the other issues (if there were any). Sorry to hear about this but please keep us posted on what you ultimately do to fix it.

Wow............I looked at this same plug so long....i almost did the same thing, ....and finally found the thread ( and picture from Sam or Ralph) to show me the light. But don't worry, there are a few gear heads here to help.....good luck. Seabee

There is a thread here or over at G503 that tells how to get things back in place without removing the power pack and disassembling the transmission . It does entail removing the transmission hump cover and removing the shifter from the top of the transmission though.

Like Raymond said....this would be my first step. The shifter lifts straight up and out, and easy to put back into place afterwards. Seabee

Well she jumps out of second really bad. So i might as well pull the power pack and rebuild the tranny. Problem is when do i have the time let alone the knowledge of doing it. I would be interested in pulling it and sending it out to someone to do. Anyone intersted?

Download a copy of the 34 and 34Parts manuals from the link at the top of this page. It should walk you right through the job. Actually, I rebuilt my transmission not long after I got my M151 in 1997. It was a pretty easy job, and I had no 34 manuals. I had a friend who is a mechanic for the local John Deere dealership help me. He said it was one of the simplest designed manual transmissions he had ever worked on.

BTW First and reverse are not synchronised gears. And if you put new synchronisers in the transmission, don't expect it to shift like a newer vehicle. Even with new gears and synchronisers, the M151 still has a rough shifting quality to it. Especially on downshifting.

Well I would be able to do it but to ship a tranny to NJ and back would cost more than the rebuild itself. As far as the reverse lever, you have to pull the top cover of the tranny, not just the shifter. It is not a big deal though. Sometimes you can fish around in the gear oil with a magnet and retrieve the part. If there is no oil in it it is easier to see the part and snag it with a magnet. Jumping out of second could be a bent shift fork which could also be repaired in vehicle since the forks come out with the cover.

Easy fix! I did the same thing. Remove the tunnel cover. There is an access cover on the top of the tranny, that the shifters are mounted into. Its held on by 6 (maybe 8, cant remember), bolts. Remove the bolts and lift the cover and shift levers out. They come out as a unit. Reach into the goo, and retreive the reverse arm, and re-install it and the retaining bolt. Check alignment of the shifting linkage, an reverse the disassembly. It's a good time to change the lube at this point, because you can see any sediment or debris inside that may need extra effort. Don't be intimidated! This isn't hard! My fill plug recess was packed full of mud and old grease, and I couldn't find the plug at all. I kept looking at the manuals, but that was the only "plug" I could find. It didn't feel" right when I was backing it out, and what a sick feeling when I heard that link go "KLINK" down into the trans. I thought I was looking at a major repair also, until I removed the tunnel cover and saw that access cover. Good luck!!! Bob

Well as soon as the mail slows down and i can have a weekend off. Ill attempt it. I wont have time to drop the tranny but will have time to remove the top cover and go that route and fish out the gear. I plan to restore the mutt this next fall so i'll rebuild the tranny then. Thanks for all your help. I have 3 manuals and your posts with the links so i should be good to go.

Thanks for the help,

20 degrees, 5 inches of snow, Carhartts. Tore it down was not as bad as i thought it would be. Took pictures of all the gears from the top. They look good. I took her out for a test run. Shifted and drove alot better than before. Shes hard to get warmed up. But all is well. Thanks for all your help. I could not have done it with out all your help.
