Another differential question

Unread post by ldj1002 » April 30th, 2010, 4:30 pm

I have read all I can about the differential noise. Some have said some rubber padding between differential and body helps a lot, some say a little maybe and some say can't tell any difference. I haven't read what all was done to try to isolate noise traveling up to body and then acting like a speaker. Seems everyone is putting it only between differential and body. Looks like if it isn't between top of bolt and body channel on rear bolts and the top of bolt and mount on front bolt it will not do any good. That bolt would still be a direct path metal to metal for the sound. IE you would not be isolating the differential from the body if you didn't put rubber on top and bottom.

Anyones thoughts?

it hanging only in rubbers two at the front of the diff in drive direction at the rear two the other direction
it lowers the diff only 12mm from the original mounting
on top of my springs i have rubber rings about 5 mm thick
so my whole rear axle is on rubber now non metallic contact

a mutt will always noisy there is no isolation at all it is one steel speaker box :D it is also his charm

George, have seen this on the other G and wondered who did it, finally get to know what you did. But since you say there's no difference then I'd say no point either (not that I'm concerned about the noise). The other thing that comes to mind is, how many U joints and crosses have you broken ? Since the whole thing hangs and dangles what's the vibration impact on the axle and drive shafts ?

i've gotten good results with 0.75" thick suspension bushings in between the diff and the body.
