Radiator overflow.

Unread post by Francis Marion » July 12th, 2010, 6:36 pm

Has anyone here added a radiator overflow tank to their 151? As much as I would like to make my A1 all original, I'm thinking that I need something to reclaim my coolant. I often wonder if my MUTT is burning through radiator fluids faster than gas.

I would be interested in seeing what others have done to resolve this problem.

It should not be losing any antifreeze at all. If you are loosing antifreeze there is a leak or a blown head gasket. You are not overfilling it are you?

Mine doesn't like to be topped off near the filler neck. It will bleed off the excess and settle at a level where you can barely see it in the upper tank. It will stay at this level indefinitely.

I don't like the looks of the head between the center cylinders. Is that etched or just looks like it. See if it looks like there is possibly hot spots on the cylinder walls. The block may be plugged up with crap if there are.

That's just carbon between the center cylinders where the head gasket was leaking. It came off during cleaning and I don't see any inconsistencies in the cylinder walls.

It was also leaking out the back in the exact same spot as mine. Make sure you check those bolt holes.

Thanks again and especially Rick for identifying the problems with my ongoing nightmare this past month.

I pulled the heads, cleaned them up, replaced the gasket, made a new intake manifold gasket, put it all back together, and it still ran rough. Opened it back up and gapped the points and valve rockers properly and suddenly it all runs like a new machine. You can't imagine how much of a relief it is to have it running well again. And, with new tires, I have eliminated the off balance tire shaking too. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have had two different151 engines with head gasket failure at the same point. We inspected the head on one and it had a corresponding defect at the same point. It was too expensive to refinish entire head so installed a nos head and gasket.Engine ran beautifully after that.
Other head just needed a new gasket to fix problem.
