A day with the Saigon Jeep Club

Unread post by csmith » September 26th, 2010, 1:35 am

Planned Saturday off and made contact with the local Saigon Jeep club, told them I was a 151 owner from the states that owned two mutts and was invited to meet with and spend the morning riding around with some of the group. Printed off some photos of my rigs to share with the group, they thought it was great that I looked them up :!: The club consists of mostly Mutts but any jeep will do and man do they love their jeeps! I spent the morning riding around the streets of Saigon in a convoy of 3 mutts and a CJ5. One of the club members got married last year and for some reason not fully explained to me the all got dressed up as if the wedding was yesterday and rode around town taking photos. The plan was to meet up with another 7-8 mutts later in the day, have some dinner and start drinking. Sounded well to me but by mid afternoon we were out in district 7, my hotel was in district 1 and I still had some things on my to do list before days end so I bailed out mid afternoon. Really wish I could have met the others, would have been great to be around 10-11 mutts at once and ride convoy around the town with that many vehicles. Have contact info and a open inventation to get together next time I am in town :)

They told me there are around 35-50 mutts in the Saigon area, not all are in the club but the club has a lot of members and they get together monthly or sometimes weekly. Many of the members were planning on doing a convoy to Hanoi at the end of the month to celebrate the 1000 year anniversary (and they invited me to come along).

Got to tell you they were as friendly and welcoming of me as it gets, and I am not sure who was most excited, them or me :!: And these guys are so ingenious and mechanical when it comes to keeping these mutts running as they have to improvise and rebuild parts as parts are very scarce there. Keep in mind all most all of these mutts are from the 60-70's and like Crusader said, they are from the war. They may not be mil-spec perfect and they love their bling but these mutts are the real deal! Most of the major parts, engin and drive train are originial.

Driving through Saigon in convoy I could only imagine what it may have been like to be riding in one of those mutts on the same streets 40 years ago :!:

Kinda mkes me wish I had keep Miss Saigon :( , Might have to get another one day :)

Photos to follow, enjoy!

Hello Clell,
the dataplate looks like a genuine M151A2 Ford plate. It has been overstamped....at least once :D

Did you get to Rang Dong garage yet?
Kind regards....
Ken

Always wanted - Details and pictures of M416 Trailer data plates & M151 data plates & body-tags for my research. Thanks!

Nice pics Clell, looks like you had fun.

I see that there's lots of innovation out there too, I like one of the snorkel ideas and not to mention all MUTTs where glasses (headlight protectors)

Ken, did not make it to the garage this time, when we called them they actually gave us the information about the Jeep Club and suggested we call them. That became my focus but I will try to get there next trip.

Sam, they all seem to have those grill guards. They actually look pretty cool and are quite funtcional. I should have keep the one off Miss Saigon.

Hi Clell,

Having only been into Jeeps in the last year I have not been in contact with any of the jeep clubs here yet but I would be interested in doing so. Can you give me the email address of the guys you were with and I can drop them a line. Also I would be interested in visiting the Rong Dong Garage if you have the address of that as well, I am always looking out for a source of new parts.
