the 246 works very similarly to the 524, but it has preset buttons for frequencies, and requires an external speaker. the real radio guys here, like rainman for instance, could give you a much more comprehensive answer. i just got that info out of the manual i got from rainman so it could go with the working 524 i got from kurt in san jose.

Hey 42GPW,
The RT designation is for Receiver-Transmitter just like in the RT-524. 199th hit it on the head with the descriptions. The RT-246 does the same frequencies with the same 50 kz spacing and in FM, "frequency modulation" as the RT-524. They communicate with the other VRC12 radios like the PRC's and PRT/PRR types. I'll include a manual just like the one 199th rec'd, in the box I'll be sending you in the next 48 hrs as well as some new batteries for the PRC's. The advantages or disadvantages of the RT-524 over the PRC's is power. The transmit of the RT246 and RT524 is variable at either 5-8 watts or 35 watts, whereas the PRC's are rated at 1.5 watts, but generally function at 3 - 4 watts transmit power. If your life depended on calling in air support obviously the 35 watts was an advantage, but when in convoy or operating without a license on the weekends for fun the lower power would limit the distance that the FCC or ham radio operators would hear you.

The 246 is slick when it tunes since the presets operate a servo system that automatically rotates the tuning dials. It's sounds a bit like the MX-6707 tuning when it does. Unlike the RT-524 the 246 can be tuned remotely with a C-2742 control box. Other than that 199th and Rainman pretty much summed it all up.

I had just remembered this old video.

http://www.archive.org/details/gov.dod.dimoc.28379

That should explain everything. It even has a M151 or two in it.

I like it because I can control the radio from the driver's seat using the dash mounted control head....

There are two boxes, that attach together and mount on the dash.

C-2299/VRC - Control box, power, audio, allows control of transceiver from dash. Can be used with both RT-246 and RT-524.
C-2742/VRC - Control Box, channel selection for RT-246 only.

See the thread "What you need for a mutt radio install" for the cable numbers etc.

Tony,

Sent you a PM.

What lengths of the CX-7059 cables do you have?
What are you asking for one?
