Gear lever boot

What's underneath this ?

I had removed the tranny bell cover to service the starter and saw lots of oil over the gearbox, so cleaned that up but the next day there was fresh oil covering all that I had cleaned.

I think this boot is cracked at the place the ring clip tightens up, I don't want to remove it unless I know what all I'm going to be dealing with underneath it.

It is a metal retainer that looks almost like the boot itself. It will have a section at the bottom with flats on it so you can unscrew it to get the shifter out. Make sure you are in neutral first to avoid hassles reinstalling. There is a gasket under that retainer that we are talking about and that is probably what is leaking.

Rick

One additional thought, if the transmission is overfull it will leak out the breather right there behind the shifter at the breather.
