Knucklehead

Well, just when you think you have everything figured out something else happens.
I was using the M151 to move some trailers around when all of a sudden it died and sterted making a
noise that I didn't like.
It wouldn't start so we pushed it into the barn. I just got to it last night , still making the noise, disconnected the leads to the fuel pump and the noise stopped.
Started thinking about replacement, then it struck me...
Yep, looked in the gas tank and it's bone dry.

Put gas in it and what do you know...fixed. I guess the lesson is check the simple things first.

If you are going to trust the fuel gauge, you should wear comfortable shoes

Since my fuel gauge always says full and I haven't taken the time to find out why, I drive mine just like a motorcycle; when it starts to go chug, I pull over and fill from the jerry can. No comfortable shoes needed.

OK, so I did grow up quite literally barefoot on gravel, but still, these things come with spare gas cans for a reason; keeping it full sure saves a lot of walking.

I carry two (2) gallons of fuel in the Gerry Can. Less weight, prevents overflowing, but gets me to a fuel point.

Actually it is illegal to carry gas in an exposed can here in the states also but rarely enforced. I do not do it because if you are rear ended the first thing to get hit will be the can and the spare. The can WILL blow gas all over. All it is going to take is a spark from a broken bulb caused by the accident, You will be hitting your brakes, or a spark from the accident itself. Remember that monk in Vietnam that crispied himself? I don't want to be like him!

Yes, exactly for that reason. On my M201 I have therefore a water canister. Still searching for a plastic water can for the 151.

Exactly, Rick.

I don't have gas in my can unless I am offroad and going back into the sticks where I need it. Never in traffic, unless it is the short run from the very last available gas station on the way out into the wilderness.

In Iraq, about midway through our tour they mandated that our fuel cans (though they were diesel or JP8) be located either in the turtleshell on our M1114, or up top out of the way of a rear impact.

I won't go into it here, but I have seen firsthand the result of this rear mount fuel in a rear end collission on a convoy in Iraq. In the case I was unfortunate enough to be present for, 3 men lost their lives as a result. 'Nuff said.

Rick there's no way that would happen... You're much taller then he was....

Unless I was off road, the can on the back of my A2 was an empty display can (rusty interior). When I was offorading, then I'd use one of those modern red steel 5 gal. Jerry cans.

Rick
I never really thought about it like that, I will never carry gas in that can again. Not that I do on a normal basis but I have during parades and such were I would be idling for long periods of time.

Paint stir from Home Depot, keep in mutt, don't trust gas guage - stick in tank! Cheap, easy, dries quickly, no more running out of gas :!: :D
