I think they were both feathered, the left engine is hard to tell since the prop is so bent up. I am guessing he stalled it and dove left wing first, cartwheeled and tore off the tail section. No matter what happened I would guess his license is gone, Take off on low fuel just to get cheaper fuel? I do not think the FAA is going to buy it.

rickf, your comment got me to thinking- no damage to the nose, if he 'cartwheeled the nose would have hit after the wing tip, no? The tail would have gone if he landed on the water tail first, and i think both wings are still there....always hard to try and figure out an accident from a photo....
so I got thinking- the NTSB investigates all accidents, and i had recently visited their site to check on the fatal last week of a friend of mine- non-IFR rated, single engine night flight in weather, scud running, March 16th 08, Florida- so if figured they should have a record of this accident.
I found it, but not on the date included with the photo..... and as is usually the case, the rumor had some truth to it ie it was fuel related, but it wasn't as simple, errrr stupid as.... as finding cheaper fuel-

Here is the website on the incident. The airplane was complete when it hit the water. He did not take fuel in FLL, he told the FBO operator that he had enough and was going to Opalocka where it was cheaper. He gambled with low tanks, plain and simple. If you do the math he had about 80 gallons a side. Thats not alot of room for error.

jeff, thanks for the additional- good site.
I just sold my flying boat, a Lake Turbo Renegade, last year and probably have put my wings away for good. Great times, interesting times, boring times, and some extremely frightening times over 50 years of flying- first with my dad in an early form variant of the Lake, a Colonial Skimmer, then on to the US Army, afterwards aerobatics- some 2,000 hours i guess total, and of that almost half was in combat. Like I said, interesting times.

At Eglin AFB the security police assigned to patrol the ramps were required to put a certain number of miles on the vehicles during their tour to ensure they kept moving and weren't sleeping. This rocket scientist found a section of ramp out of sight of the tower, and with a rush of endorphins in his brain devised a plan to tie off the steering wheel so that his car would circle whilst he snored.....thus putting the required miles on the car without interrupting his beauty sleep. What he hadn't planned on was his little tiedown slipping, and his patrol car zipping across the ramp becoming wedged under an F-15....while he was blissfully dreaming of sally rotten-crotch...he had to be extricated from the vehicle... I think he's still paying off the damages lol
