USMC markings?

Unread post by Emmett » August 9th, 2011, 8:56 am

I know how the USMC marked their vehicles but have no idea how they marked their trailers.

I have a 151 A2 and will eventually be marked USMC 51XXXXX across the sides of the hood and on the bumperetts.
Did the MC mark the trailers with the same series type of numbering system or something different?

Thanks

Here is an example of the single color markin. (Link to Steelsoldiers you must be logged in to see pics) I had to make up the numbers but i used a best guess on those. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/trailers/5 ... ation.html The blue diamond was specific for the local Tallahassee unit but the placement of the numbers and USMC is correct and taken from the USMC Manual.

From what I can remember that the Marines marked their vehcles with "USMC" on the hood and the Anchor, Globe and Eagel icon was in variouse places. I don't remember any bumper markings but again it was over 30 years to 40 years ago.

As suspected the USMC marks the trailers like the vehicles.
It would be USMC 573XXX and possibly an owner type tac mark.
Must admit I have never seen an EGA on a MC vehicle but never say never.

Thanks for the info.

Any unit/motorpool could put anything they wanted on it, I suppose. On our trailers, I don't remember any "usmc" on it,
My 2 Cents.

Don't know why I didn't see that.
I must admit that I haven't seen a USMC vehicle with the national symbol. The 4 unmolested USMC vehicles (2 M151's, aM35 and M109A3) didn't have the star just the normal USMC markings. Very interesting indeed.

normally the national symbol (star) is only applied overseas, and on non-camoed vehicles.

Emmett,
what era do you intend to paint and mark your trailer? (cammo or plain?).
As for the numbering, the USMC didn't have their equipment group-coded by numbers or letters.....the next item of equipment to join the USMC was given the next number in the inventory.....so an M416 trailer could have a number, say, 501234 and a HMMWV could be 551200. Having said that, a batch of M416 trailers would be likely to have numbers close to each other.....but if the delivery was interspersed with other vehicles, the trailer numbers could be well-apart from each other.
The Army did use the group-code system, where 1/4-ton trucks used prefix "2" or "02", and 1/4-ton trailers used the prefix "6" or "06" Does that make sense? Hope so........
Ken
Kind regards....

Yep Ken, I pretty much figured that one out.
Looking at the numbers on several vehicles and their date of delivery you can pretty much guess what a close number should be.
I wasn't sure if the trailers were considered the same as a vehicle. Now I know.
As the trailer was blasted prior to me buying it, I have to guess what the number would be....Just need to find out the date of delivery.

I will paint the 416 in the 4 color MERDEC (sp?) to match the 151. The only decision I have to make is weather or not to upgrade the lights to the composite ones to match the A2.

Thanks for all the input Guys.

Hello again Emmett,
do you need the cammo pattern for the trailer? And have you got the color numbers for the paint?
As for the tail-lights, either way is acceptable, as many of the trailers had the lights upgraded to the composites, but the old type have their own peculiar charm :D

Ken,
No I don't have the 4 color scheme for the 416...been looking around. I do have it for the 151 and it is pretty much finished.
I have some touch-up to complete after the "sea trials" are through.
I always expect small problems after a complete rebuild. So far I have been lucky and only have a few things that need to be looked at.
By all means, please send me the 4 color scheme for the 416....that would be great!

Regards,
ET
